Elks vs. Tiger-Cats Prediction: CFL Week 16 Point Spread, Odds

The last game in Week 16 around the CFL is Saturday evening and could be the biggest mismatch of the weekend as East Division-leading Hamilton hosts West last-place Edmonton. The Tiger-Cats are -5.5 on the CFL odds with a total of 56.5 points that is the highest of the four games.

Edmonton has work to do to get into the playoffs as the Elks are solo last in the West Division at 5-8, a game behind Winnipeg and B.C. But the Elks have a horrible 1-5 division mark, so it’s going to take a minor miracle in the final quarter of the regular season or so to play extra football. The CFL official site had a playoff probability chart, and it gives Edmonton a 29.3 per cent shot at the post-season, which equates to about +240 on a moneyline.

Hamilton is in great shape for the post-season as it has a two-game lead atop the East Division over second-place Montreal and is a stellar 5-1 in the division. The Tiger-Cats have the best probability of the playoffs of any team at 99.6 per cent and have about the same of hosting a playoff game. West Division-leading Saskatchewan is the +260 favourite to win the Grey Cup with Hamilton next at +290. But the Ticats have the best probability of winning it at 39.7 per cent with the Roughriders at 16.9 per cent.

This wraps up the season series between the clubs. They split in 2024 with both winning on the road – Edmonton prevailed 47-22 away – and that trend continued on Aug. 2 this year when Hamilton won 28-24 in Edmonton as a 3.5-point favourite. Tiger-Cats QB Bo Levi Mitchell completed 30 of 42 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns. He hit Tim White for a 27-yard touchdown with about two minutes left for the winning score.

The Elks are 4-2 ATS in the past six meetings and the over is 5-2 in the previous seven.

Edmonton Elks

Edmonton was a 3-point underdog last Saturday in Toronto and lost 31-30 but did improve to 5-1 ATS in its past six games. Argos kicker Lirim Hajrullahu made a 48-yard field goal on the final play of game after the Elks led at the end of each of the first three quarters. Vincent Blanchard’s third field goal of the game for the Elks with just over a minute to play gave his team a short-lived 30-28 lead.

Cody Fajardo was terrific in the loss, completing 25 of 28 passes for 229 yards and TD passes to Kaion Julien-Grant and Justin Rankin. Fajardo eclipsed 20,000 career yards passing. Defensive end Jonathan Kongbo had two sacks for the Elks, who had a season-high four interceptions after entering with only three on the year. They also stopped Toronto on downs twice.

Edmonton missed an opportunity to create a three-way tie for third in the West Division. Fullback Tanner Green was out injured, but he’s not a huge part of the offence. Edmonton is 4-1 ATS in its past five on the road and the under is 4-1 in those.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton won and covered its second game in a row last Friday, 32-21 over visiting Winnipeg as a 7.5-point favourite. Earlier that day, the Ticats received the news that GM Ted Goveia had died. The team had already planned to honour Goveia’s impact on Canadian football in the contest, dubbing it the “Team Ted” game.

QB Bo Levi Mitchell, the -160 favourite to win CFL Most Outstanding Player, completed 21 of 28 passing for 230 yards and two scores and leads the league with 26 TD tosses. It was his eighth multi-touchdown game of this season. Kenny Lawler had seven catches for 97 yards facing his former team for the first time, and Greg Bell carried 22 times for 137 yards and a TD — his second-straight 100-yard game. Marc Liegghio kicked four field goals and two converts.

Hamilton picked off two Winnipeg passes and both would eventually lead to touchdowns. Hamilton has scored a league-high 98 points off turnovers, an average of more than a touchdown per game. It appears the Ticats got out of that fairly healthy.

Saturday will be the first time in four years that Hamilton will host consecutive home games without a bye week separating them. That seems impossible, but it’s per the team website. Hamilton is 2-4 ATS in its past six overall and at home. The under is 4-2 in the team’s past six overall.
