Alouettes vs. Stampeders Prediction: CFL Week 16 Point Spread, Odds

It’s a crossover game in the CFL on Saturday as the Montreal Alouettes travel west to face the Calgary Stampeders. The Als sit second in the East Division with a 6-7 record, but they enter Week 16 riding an ugly four-game losing streak. The Stamps are also coming into the week fresh off a loss and now sit second-last in the West Division with a 4-9 record.

Montreal is a slim 1.5-point road favourite on the CFL odds, while the total is sitting at 47.0.

CFL Odds and Betting

This has been a fairly even series over the last several years, with the teams splitting the last 10 head-to-heads. The Alouettes struck first this season, downing Calgary 25-18 at home in Week 8. In a bizarre twist, the only touchdown scored in the game came off an interception from Montreal cornerback Kabion Ento.

Alberta hasn’t been kind to the Als as they’ve dropped 11 of their last 12 games in Calgary. Montreal has failed to cover in four of their last five games, but it’s worth noting they are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 games against the Stamps. The team is +900 to reach the Grey Cup and +1700 to win the title.

Although Calgary generally dominates at home against Montreal, the Stampeders have managed just two wins in six home dates this season. They are a decent cover option, however, as they’ve gone 4-1-1 ATS across their last six games. The Stampeders are +2200 long shots to reach the Grey Cup and +3400 to win.

Montreal Alouettes

A late field goal ended Montreal’s hope of overtime in last week’s 23-20 home loss against Toronto. It was a tale of two halves for quarterback Cody Fajardo, who managed just 63 yards on 12-of-17 passing in the first half. Fajardo completed 18 of 22 pass attempts in the second half for 211 yards. Tyson Philpot finished with a game-high 105 receiving yards and caught the Alouettes’ only touchdown pass. Caleb Evans also managed to punch in a quarterback sneak touchdown from the one-yard line.

Montreal’s middling record can be attributed to their middle-of-the-pack team statistics this year. The Als rank fourth in average yards per game (359.9), fifth in rushing yards per game (99.4), fifth in passing yards per game (260.5) and sixth in points per game (22.8). Defensively, they allow an average of 24.8 points per game, ranking fourth in the CFL.

Calgary Stampeders

Calgary went into last week’s bye with a sour taste in their mouths following a 25-23 road loss to provincial rival Edmonton on September 9. It was the Stampeders’ fourth loss in five games. A positive takeaway in the game is the performance of quarterback Jake Maier, who completed 21 of 29 pass attempts for 210 yards and two TDs. It’s been an inconsistent year for Maier as he ranks second in the CFL with 3,310 passing yards, but has managed to throw 13 interceptions compared to just 14 touchdowns.

Calgary’s offence has struggled heavily this season. They rank in the bottom-third of the CFL in total yards per game (346.8), rushing yards per game (91.1) and passing yards per game (255.7). They average 23.5 ppg, which is fifth-best. Defensively, the Stampeders allow an average of 26.9 ppg, the third-worst mark in the league.
