Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Roughriders will look for the season series sweep when Saskatchewan visits Winnipeg this week.

For the Bombers, it’s a second shot a clinching a playoff spot after failing to do so in Edmonton last week, while Saskatchewan has already clinched the West Division and doesn’t have much to play for this week.

The spread has heavily shifted towards the Blue Bombers at favourites by a touchdown because the Riders will be resting several starters, including quarterback Trevor Harris.

Backup QB Jake Maier is expected to start for Saskatchewan. In Maier’s only start of the season back in Week 4, he completed 13 of 23 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

There’s a bit of uncertainty over who Maier will be able to target as Saskatchewan’s receiving group is banged up. KeeSean Johnson (knee) and Dohnte Meyers (ankle) have each surpassed 1,000 receiving yards this season, but likely won’t play this week.

The Roughriders really have nothing to play for this week, so I expect Winnipeg to roll at home.

Pick: Winnipeg

Edmonton Elks at BC Lions

Edmonton will try to keep their slim playoff hopes alive against the streaking Lions in BC this week in a must-win game for the Elks.

Edmonton is last in the West Division standings, so they not only have to win-out against BC and Calgary, they also need one of the Blue Bombers or Stampeders to lose-out.

The other story for the Elks right now is the play of running back Justin Rankin, who just torched Winnipeg for 138 rushing yards and a touchdown last week. Rankin leads the CFL in scrimmage yards (1,608) and receiving yards among running backs (632) and he is second in total touchdowns (13).

The Lions, however, can more than match Edmonton’s offence. BC leads the CFL in net yards per game and offensive points per game, while their average of 7.93 yards per play is the best in league history.

Riding a four-game win streak, the Leos have already clinched a playoff spot, but they’re in a fight with Winnipeg and Calgary for second in the division and a home playoff game.

Pick: BC

Montreal Alouettes at Ottawa RedBlacks

The Alouettes and RedBlacks complete a home-and-home series when they meet in Ottawa this week.

Montreal spanked Ottawa 30-10 last week and a win this week moves them into a tie with Hamilton for top spot in the East Division. The Ti-Cats hold the tiebreaker after sweeping the season series against the Alouettes, so a Montreal loss locks them into second place in the division.

Ottawa’s offence really struggled last week, producing just 10 points and one touchdown. Quarterback Dru Brown has been shut down for the year, so it’s Dustin Crum under centre. Crum only managed 162 passing yards last week and dropped to 5-15 in his career as a starter.

Davis Alexander is in a totally different spot at 10-0 in his career as a CFL starter, which is a league record. Multiple injuries have limited Alexander to six games this season, but he’s been phenomenal when available. Over an 18-game season pace, Alexander projects to throw for 5,088 yards and 24 TDs to just nine interceptions.

And for what it’s worth, a loss this week guarantees the RedBlacks get the first overall pick in next year’s draft, so I don’t expect them to be overly eager to play the spoiler role.

Pick: Montreal

Toronto Argonauts at Calgary Stampeders

Calgary is looking to clinch a playoff spot at home this week as they prepare to face an Argonauts group already out of the postseason and riding a four-game losing skid.

A win doesn’t just clinch the playoffs for the Stamps, it also means they’ll stick on the West side of the bracket and avoid the dreaded crossover.

This is actually the season finale for the Argos, who will miss the postseason after winning the Grey Cup last year. Chad Kelly never returned to action after suffering a gruesome broken leg in last year’s East Division Final and Nick Arbuckle has also been shutdown for the year.

Jarret Doege takes the reins under centre for Toronto. Doege made his first start of the year last week, throwing for 221 yards with a touchdown and interception. Overall for the year, Doege has thrown for 786 yards, four TDs and six interceptions while completing 66.7 per cent of his passes.

Pick: Calgary
