Saskatchewan, Montreal and Toronto are all off to perfect starts to the season.
Just three teams remain undefeated heading into Week 4 and with Montreal and Toronto going head-to-head this week, that number will shrink to two.
With Week 4 kicking off on Thursday, let’s take a quick look at the Riders, Alouettes and Argonauts.
2024 Grey Cup odds
Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-0)
Week 1 result: 29-21 @ Edmonton Elks
Week 2 result: 33-30 @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Week 3 result: 36-20 vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Next five weeks: Bye, vs. Toronto, @ BC, vs. Winnipeg, @ Montreal
The Roughriders have looked great early in the season, but they still haven’t faced a team that has won a game yet. Saskatchewan has a tough test coming up as after this week’s bye as they face stiff competition in Toronto, BC, Winnipeg and Montreal.
There’s also concern over the status of Trevor Harris. He left last week’s home opener against Hamilton with a leg injury and was seen on the sidelines with a brace on his left knee. We likely won’t know how serious Harris’ injury is until next week, but it’s definitely something to monitor.
Montreal Alouettes (3-0)
Week 1 result: 21-12 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Week 2 result: 23-20 @ Edmonton Elks
Week 3 result: 47-21 vs. Ottawa RedBlacks
Next five weeks: @ Toronto, vs. Calgary, vs. Toronto, Bye, vs. Saskatchewan
Montreal flew under the radar last year, but no one is sleeping on the defending Grey Cup champions in 2024. The Alouettes started their season with back-to-back road victories before blowing out Hamilton in their home opener last week.
The core of last year’s team remains in place and they have the No. 1 defence in the CFL that leads the league in average opponent yards per game (340.3), QBR (72.6) and points (17.7).
Toronto Argonauts (2-0)
Week 1 result: 35-27 vs. BC Lions
Week 2 result: Bye
Week 3 result: 39-36 vs. Edmonton Elks
Next five weeks: vs. Montreal, @ Saskatchewan, @ Montreal, @ Hamilton, vs. Winnipeg
With reigning Most Outstanding Player Chad Kelly suspended for at least the first nine games this season, it looked like it could be a disastrous year in Toronto. That hasn’t been the case as Cameron Dukes has impressed, completing 81.2 per cent of his passes while throwing five touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Argos lead the league in average rushing yards per game (145.5), QBR (142.0) and most importantly, points (37.0).
Prediction
With the Alouettes and Argonauts playing in Toronto this week, we know one team’s perfect record will be ruined. The Als have looked great on both sides of the ball, while the Argos have the worst pass defence in the CFL. I don’t think it will as bad of beating as last year’s playoff matchup, but I think Montreal wins this week.
Saskatchewan has a Week 4 bye before a tough schedule that will see them play four difficult opponents in four consecutive weeks. I’m going with the team that has the easier schedule. The Alouettes only have one road game over the next five weeks and I don’t see them slowing down anytime soon.
Prediction: Keep betting on Montreal because they will be the last undefeated team this season.
