Team Portugal
The Selecao, managed by Fernando Santos, are ranked ninth in the world. It’s the sixth straight World Cup appearance for Portugal and its best result in that stretch was fourth in 2006. It reached the Round of 16 four years ago. Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. finished second in their group qualifying behind Serbia and then beat Turkey and North Macedonia in a playoff to get in. This is expected to be the 37-year-old Ronaldo’s last for his country, although he dismissed reports of retirement before the playoff.
The five-time FIFA Player of the Year did say he plans to continue play for his country until EURO 2024. On Tuesday, Manchester United cut him free as he had been pushing for his release from the Premier League side since the summer. Ronaldo’s contract at Old Trafford was due to run until June. He is free to join another club immediately and will not have to wait until the January transfer window. Ronaldo is looking to become first player to score in five different World Cups.
Team Ghana
The Black Stars, managed by Otto Addo, are ranked No. 61 in the world. After a disappointing effort in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations at the group stage earlier this year, Ghana chose to get rid of manager Milovan Rejavac, replacing him with Addo. Ghana is in the World Cup for the first time since 2014 when it failed to get out of the group stage.
In qualifying, Ghana topped Group G of CAF’s qualification campaign, losing just once, and then knocked out rival Nigeria in a two-leg playoff. Four members of the starting lineup against Nigeria were under the age of 25 and two of them still teenagers. The team’s star is Mohammed Kudus, who plays professionally with Ajax. Kudus has had a hand in nine goals in the Eredivisie and Champions League since the start of September.
