FIFA Women’s World Cup Players to Get Paid $30K

After years of effort, bargaining, and pleading, FIFA has listened to women football players and their supporters and agreed to raise the money that goes into the Women’s World Cup. More importantly, a hefty chunk of that money will go directly into the pockets of the players themselves.

At a bare minimum, every single country representative will make $30,000 at this summer’s tournament.

Players at Women’s World Cup to Earn $30K

There was an extended conversations dating back to last year for the women’s tournament to receive additional funds so that not only would the pay be more worthy, but accommodations and travel arrangements up to par with the men’s tournament. Players on the World Cup winning squad will go back home with an extra $270,000.

A report published last year by FIFA itself revealed that the average annual salary of a female footballer was $14,000.

As an example, the 2019 Women’s World Cup had a total fund of $40 million. This coming edition’s budget was raised to $152 million. Consider that football federations who were knocked out in the group stage of the men’s World Cup in Qatar still earned $9 million each.

In October 2022, FIFPRO, the worldwide union representing football players, supported the effort of 150 hailing from 25 different countries, which culminated in an official request letter sent to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

U.S. forward Alex Morgan commented:

“We still have ways to go, but having them direct payments to players is huge – it’s a life changing thing for many of these players entering the tournament. Coming away with $30,000 is huge because usually that money goes to federations and those players don’t see any, or much of that money.”
