NFL Opening Sunday Game Notes

NFL Sunday is upon us and from a bettor’s perspective, there’s action to be had. With big upsets this week in the form of Pittsburgh and USC not covering and Notre Dame starting the season with a shocking if not exciting fourth quarter loss to Michigan, gamblers are looking for value in this Sunday’s games, kicking off in less than an hour.

The Dallas Cowboys are the favorite at -5.5 against the Tampa Bay Bucs, but the question looms as to which Tony Romo actually shows. Will the offseason personal and media distractions (girlfriends, practice facility collapses and T.O. managing to steal all the media attention from as far away as the great white north) lead to a characteristic display of a lack of focus from Dallas? Possibly.

The Baltimore Ravens are a prohibitive favorite over the Kansas City Chiefs at -13.5. Baltimore has sneakily become a team that looks to be a beast this season and may have a surprising passing game that may have slipped under the radar in preseason and offseason. This game against a seemingly harmless opponent could reveal a great deal of information about whether Baltimore will be as dominant as some think this season.

The Atlanta Falcons are set at -4.5 over the Miami Dolphins, and this is a game to watch. Miami was the NFL’s surprise team last season, and though they looked shaky in the preseason, they battled weather conditions in all of their games. This is another game to watch, as Miami may be better than their preseason performance indicates.

And, of course, the game that everybody is watching … Minnesota Vikings at the Cleveland Browns. Minnesota is only favored at -5.5, and at this moment over 80% of the public bettors at Sports Interaction are on Minnesota. Will Brett’s debut in purple be an easy cover? Popular opinion says it may be.

It’s tough to root for a home team in a world of hyper-nomadic lifestyles. Sports fans who move because of jobs, family, or marriage aren’t just leaving behind their old houses, friends, and favorite bars and restaurants. They’re also saying good-bye to their beloved team. Sure, they’ll be cheering just as loud from far away, but in too many cases, that cheering is done while listening to the broadcast on the radio, or on the one or two occasions where their favorite pick somehow makes it to network. The rest of the time, it’s a frantic refreshing of websites. Can you even imagine how people did this back before the internet? You’d have to wait for the next-day’s sports page or have a hometown buddy call you and relay the game over the phone.

None of those clever substitutes hold a candle to watching your favorite team succeed in those last nail-biting moments of the big game. That’s why NFL’s Sunday Ticket is such a big deal. Finally, no matter where you are in the States, you can watch all the action of your favorite home team, even if you’re thousands of miles away from home. From the play-offs to the beginning of the season, every single game they play is on the air, available to you for watching on Sunday. There’s no more scouring your new hometown for a bar where they might have your game on, only to get made fun of for wearing the wrong jersey.

Want to keep an eye on the competition? It’s possible to see what your favorite team is up against by tuning into any number of the games featuring your biggest rivals. With Sunday Ticket, it’s not just one team that you choose: it’s every single Sunday game all on at the same time. Getting bored of the half-time show? Instead of switching the channel to something that isn’t related to football, you can check up on every single game. With all of this information at your disposal, you’ll surely be the champion of your office’s fantasy football league immediately, no matter who you’re rooting for at home.

Best of all, every big game for your team can feel like Super Bowl Sunday. Know a couple of other folks in your new hometown who are as die-hard as you are? Invite them over to watch the game in real-time. If it’s down to a tense last 30 seconds and they’re able to see their beloved team triumph at the very end of the fourth quarter, it’s likely that you’ll have made a friend for life (you know how sports fans are). And what if you and your spouse somehow have a star-crossed love where each of you have a different favorite team? Now you can both keep track without driving each other crazy. It should be easy to find a way to share custody of your Sunday Ticket so that both of you get to tune into the games that you’re dying to watch. Finally, no matter where you are, with Sunday Ticket, you’ve got the home-team advantage.
