Horse Racing: Louisiana Derby Tops Weekend Slate

The countdown to the Kentucky Derby is already underway and Al Dannity is on hand to preview two the weekend’s big races. The Louisiana Derby and the Sundown Derby could both deliver some clues as to what to expect in Churchill Downs in May.

Mucho mania
The $1 million Louisiana Derby takes place on Saturday with Mucho Macho Man, the favorite to take the honors. The 3 year old colt has some celebrity fans as The Village People have thrown their support Mucho Macho Man. Patti Reeves, who co-owns Mucho Macho Man, is a big fan of the band and she even has the group’s songs as her cellphone’s ringtone. Reeves was so delighted to learn of the Village People’s support that she’s even considering putting an autographed picture of the group outside Mucho Macho Man’s stable.

Aside from the feted colt, the other contenders to watch out for include second-favorite Machen. Having already notched up a couple of impressive victories, Machen has shown an ability to raise its game depending on the quality of the field it’s up against. Louisiana is quite a step up however and it’s tough to see Machen challenging the favorite on Saturday. When the band that gave the world YMCA is in its corner, I have to go for Mucho Macho Man to win this race.

The answer lies in the stars
One wonders if the favorite for Saturday’s Sunland Park Derby already knows the result. Astrology may have an insight into the future when it lines up for the $800,000 event. This is Astrology’s first start since running second in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs in November. In addition to Astrology, Steve Asmussen has another 3 year old entered with Fusa Code breaking from post 3. In five starts, Fusa Code has one win, one second place, and one third place finish.

Jinks Fires hopes for a good performance from Supreme Ruler in the 1 and 1/8 mile race. The field also includes the Bob Baffert trained Sinai while owners Lori and George Hall have two entries in the form of Nacho Saint and Ruler on Ice. Much like the Louisiana Derby, this race promises to provide some insight into what to expect later this year. The post time is 7.45pm EST for the featured race of the day.
