Lady Gaga Meat Dress Outfit Steals VMA Spotlight

The usually scantily clad Lady Gaga was mostly covered up when she accepted the “Video of the Year” award for “Bad Romance” at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night. But upon closer inspection, viewers suddenly realized what the curious fabric that hung in strips from her body actually was – yes, Lady Gaga was draped head to toe in meat.

Gaga wore a series of interesting outfits last night but nothing topped the meat dress. Cher, dressed in an outfit reminiscent of her infamous 1980s “If I Could Turn Back Time” get-up, presented the “Video of the Year” award to Gaga, who remarked “I never thought I’d be asking Cher to hold my meat purse.”

With tears streaming down her face and a meat patty on her head, Gaga thanked her fans before revealing the title of her third album, Born This Way, then sang the title track’s chorus before leaving the stage.

“How beautiful in my way, cause God makes no mistakes,” she sang. “I’m on the right track. Baby, I was born this way.”

The dress left many wondering what the message behind the it was – or whether this was just another way for Gaga to grab the spotlight.

Gaga explained to Ellen DeGeneres the meaning of her meat dress, saying, “Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations but for me this evening. If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.”

A rep for PETA was predictably upset over Gaga’s choice of fabric, telling TMZ that Gaga “has a hard time being ‘over the top,’ and wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment.”

They go on to say that if in fact the dress was made of real meat, “After time spent under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling in maggots.”

Even though she was wearing the rotting carcass of a dead animal, it didn’t stop Gaga from becoming the most decorated female VMA winner in a single show, taking home an astonishing eight awards. Gaga is well on her way to out-awarding Madonna, who has a total of 20 VMA Moonmen on her trophy shelf.

The VMAs had an even bigger eye-rolling moment, which was when Taylor Swift performed a melodramatic (and vocally shaky) song entitled “Stealing Innocence,” directed at Kanye West, who had jumped on the stage last year, grabbed the microphone from Swift and pointed out that Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” was infinitely better than Swift’s for “Best Female Video.”

However, Swift wanted to let Kanye know she’d forgiven him for his sins. “You’re still an innocent,” Swift repeatedly sang of West.

For his part, West showcased his expletive-laden song “Runaway,” advising the audience to have a toast “for the a-holes” while ballerinas danced behind him.

“Kanye! Kanye! Kanye,” the crowd chanted after his performance. Kanye was given the night’s only standing ovation. We’d say Kanye won that one. Sorry, Taylor.
