College Football Bowl Schedule Set

The regular season is in the books but there’s plenty of College Football still to be played. Al Dannity looks at the juiciest match-ups and provides the full slate of College Football bowl games.

Long way to Glendale
The College Bowl slate begins in Albuquerque, winds its way east all the way to the Bronx, before hightailing it back west all the way to Pasadena before finally coming to a halt in Glendale for the BCS National Championship Game. Along the way there are 35 games to be played, pitting upstarts against established names and bringing together some old foes in unfamiliar surroundings.

Early treats
While the bulk of the top tier games are saved for New Year’s Eve onwards, the swathe of early bowl games always deliver a couple of potential classics. This year’s MAACO Las Vegas Bowl promises to be the best game for College Football betting fans before Christmas, as Utah take on Boise State in a match-up that pits two teams who saw their BCS hopes dashed late in the season. Fans of old-school smashmouth Football will be thrilled at the prospect of Georgia Tech meeting Air Force in the AdvoCare V100 Independence. Both teams have run-based option offenses that should light up the scoreboard.

The undoubted highlight of the early schedule is the meeting of Iowa and Missouri in the Insight Bowl on December 28. The Hawkeyes underachieved in 2010 while Missouri beat all expectations. Regular season records count for nothing in bowl games and this promises to be a hard-fought game.

Things get serious
The bowl season kicks up a notch on New Year’s Eve with Miami and Notre Dame renewing their long-standing rivalry at the Hyundai Sun Bowl. That evening sees South Carolina look to restore some pride to the SEC East when they meet Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

New Year’s Day sees three huge SEC vs Big Ten match-ups. Florida and Penn State get the action under way in the Outback Bowl while the Captial One Bowl pits Alabama against Michigan State. The Gators and Crimson Tide both fell short of their goals in 2010 and will be eager to finish the season on a high. Finally the Gator Bowl pits Denard Robinson and the Michigan Wolverines against Mississippi State. This game could decide the fate of Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez.

BCS tops the business end
The SEC-Big Ten rivalry continues once the BCS Bowls get under way with Arkansas taking on Ohio State in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on January 4. The Rose Bowl has an unfamiliar participant this year as the Horned Frogs of TCU represent the Mountain West Conference against the Wisconsin Badgers on New Year’s Day. The Fiesta Bowl also has a first time participant in the shape of the Connecticut Huskies. Despite only managing an 8-4 record for the year, UConn rallied late in the season to claim the Big East title to set up a date with the Oklahoma Sooners. Stanford’s return to the big bowls sees the Cardinal travel cross-country to take on Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. A win for the Hokies would give them their first ever 12 win season to add to their fourth ACC title in seven years.

All of these games however will build up to the biggest of them all when the Auburn Tigers take on the Oregon Ducks. It’s SEC vs Pac-10 in the BCS National Championship Game and sparks will surely fly when these electrifying offenses take the field.
