Canada

Team Canada may be sitting atop of Group A with four points from its first two matches, but the club’s lack of firepower is concerning. The Canucks played to a scoreless draw against New Zealand last Thursday and Christine Sinclair’s late penalty in the team’s opener still stands as Canada’s lone goal in the World Cup. So far, Canada hasn’t played with the urgency you’d like to see from the host nation and some poor marking at the back isn’t encouraging either. The Canadians will be playing in front of a packed house at the Big O with 48,000 fans expected.

Woman to watch:

Erin McLeod, keeper – McLeod’s fantastic play is one of the main reasons why Canada has a chance to clinch the group tonight.

Quote of note:

“As a forward, you get worried when you’re not creating chances and chances aren’t falling for you. Myself, but also the rest of the front line, we’ve created chances. Sooner or later they’re going to go in. People have to realize it’s the World Cup — we’re playing against the best teams in the world. There are no slouches.” – Christine Sinclair.

Netherlands

Netherlands is another team that’s struggling to find the back of the net with just one goal in the tournament as well, but that’s not to say the attacking pedigree isn’t on the roster. Holland will likely use a trio of forwards again against Canada and should push the pace from the opening kick. The Netherlands gave up a last-minute goal to China and that has their backs against the wall in this matchup with Canada. They’ll be out to make an impression early.

Woman to watch:

Viviane Miedema, striker – Miedema scored 16 goals during World Cup qualifying and is Holland’s best bet to hit the score sheet.

Quote of note:

“She’s a great talent, has good skills. So we will see. It’s good for her to be here, it’s good for our team to be here. These kind of games, big games, you have to play to become better.” – Netherlands coach Roger Reijners said of Miedema.

Prediction:

Canada 2, Netherlands 1.
