Hockey Day in Canada: Odds and Predictions
- Updated: February 17, 2017
This weekend’s Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday, February 18 is another great game day for Canadian hockey fans, with every team in Canada in action. The first game is an early one, at 2 p.m. ET, with the Winnipeg Jets heading to the Bell Centre in Montreal to face the Canadiens and their new coach, Claude Julien. At 8 p.m. there are two games, with the Edmonton Oilers travelling to Chicago to play the Blackhawks, and a Battle of Ontario between the Ottawa Senators and the Maple Leafs, who only have one point separating them in the standings. Later, at 10 p.m. ET, the Vancouver Canucks will hit the ice against the Calgary Flames. Let’s take a closer look at each game and their odds on Sports Interaction.
Winnipeg Jets vs. Montreal Canadiens
Prediction: Canadiens 4-1
The Jets have some marquee games in their road trip this week, including one they just lost in Pittsburgh on Thursday, when Penguins captain Sidney Crosby notched his 1000th career point. The Jets will now have to face the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre for Hockey Day in Canada, where they’ll be the first team the Habs play under new coach Claude Julien, who replaced Michel Therrien earlier in the week.
Edmonton Oilers vs. Chicago Blackhawks
Prediction: Blackhawks 3-2
The Blackhawks will be facing the Edmonton Oilers on Hockey Day in Canada very well rested, as they just took advantage of the league implemented bye week, which gives every team at least five consecutive days off at some point in January or February. For the Blackhawks, that started last Sunday and carried on throughout the week before the hit the ice again against Edmonton. The Oilers are coming off a big 6-3 win against the Flyers, with Connor McDavid getting his 19th goal of the season as well as two assists.
Ottawa Senators vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
Prediction: Senators 3-1
The Senators are in a race for the top of the Atlantic Division, and currently sit just four points behind the Habs for that title, with three games in hand. Mike Condon was back in net this week and stopped 21 shots which ties him for 4th in the league for shutouts. This will be the last game in the Battle of Ontario series this season, as they play the Leafs at home. Toronto’s red hot Mitch Marner suffered an upper arm/shoulder injury in the Leafs last game, and although hasn’t officially been counted out for the game against the Sens, he was not participating in the team practice on Friday morning.
Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames
Prediction: Flames 4-2
The final Hockey Night in Canada game will be between rivals the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks. It’s the start of a five-game road trip for the Flames, and it’ll mark the 4th match up between them this season. Vancouver has claimed two wins out of those, one of them a shootout win, meaning the Flames have three points against them. In terms of Conference standings, the two teams are very close. Vancouver has lost four of their last six going against the Flames.
