NFL Point Spreads Week 2: Best Picks Against the Spread

The first week of the National Football League’s 2017-18 season was a surprising one, to say the least. Five teams scored single-digit points, including the Seahawks, the Colts, the Giants and the Texans. The Cincinnati Bengals? They didn’t put a single point on the board. The Patriots – defending Super Bowl champions – gave up 42 points at home and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, setting a tone for the upsets that Week 1 would bring. Let’s take a look at Sports Interaction’s Week 2 NFL odds and point spreads, and our predictions. Games Sunday unless noted.

Houston Texans at Cincinnati Bengals, Thursday

Even after a dismal offensive showing in Week 1, the Bengals are favorites here to beat the Texans. The Texans fell 29-7 to the Jaguars in Week 1 and QB Tom Savage was replaced by rookie Deshaun Watson before the second half of the game started. The Texans allowed 10 sacks in that game, so expect the Bengals to take full advantage of that defensive liability.

Point Spread: Bengals -5
Pick ATS: Bengals

Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens

Since Baltimore crushed the Bengals 20-0 in Week 1, no one was surprised to see the Ravens priced as -7.5 favorites to beat the Browns this week. That said, the Browns looked better than average when they played the Steelers in Week 1, and took the game to the wire before losing to Pittsburgh 21-18. Raven’s RB Danny Woodhead may be out for this game, and if he is those odds might shift slightly towards Cleveland.

Point Spread: Ravens -7.5
Pick ATS: Ravens

Chicago Bears at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Chicago’s new QB, Mike Glennon, returns to his former home this week as the Bucs host the Bears. The Bears lost to the Falcons in Week 1, but Glennon looked pretty comfortable with his new team, completing 65 percent of his passes and throwing zero interceptions. The Bears’ defense also looked good and considering the Falcon’s offensive line is better than Tampa Bay’s, Chicago has a good chance to cover the spread here.

Point Spread: Bucs -6.5
Pick ATS: Bears

Minnesota Vikings at Pittsburgh Steelers

Both teams are 1-0 after last week, but the Vikes beat the Saints to get there and Pittsburgh only had to win against the Browns. Sam Bradford brought his team to a 29-19 win vs. New Orleans and had 3 touchdowns and 346 yards. If they can keep up that pace without collapsing like they did last season, they’ll be contenders in the NFC. Last week against the Browns, Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger completed 24 of 36 passes for 263 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. Depending on the spread here, the Vikings should be able to cover if it’s less than 6.

Point Spread: TBA
Pick ATS: Vikings

New England Patriots at New Orleans Saints

Tom Brady and the Patriots were embarrassed by the Chiefs in Week 1 to the tune of 42-27, so don’t expect them to allow another blowout win by their opponents this week. The Pats’ defense did NOT look good in week 1, and the Saints are a good home team, so this could be a high scoring game. The Patriots have won eight straight road games, and the Saints have won 4 of 6 home games. Although it’s way too early in the season for this to be a trend, Tom Brady only completed 44 percent of his passes last week, while Drew Brees completed 73 percent.

Point Spread: Patriots -7
Pick ATS: Patriots

Philadelphia Eagles at Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City has come home with a startlingly good W under their belt and to a lively home crowd that will want to see a big victory against their division rivals. The Eagles looked excellent defensively in their 30-17 road win against the Redskins in week 1, and both teams will be looking to build on strong starts. Expect constant pressure on the Eagles’ QB Carson Wentz from the Chiefs, who should cover the spread here.

Point Spread: Chiefs -4.5
Pick ATS: Chiefs

Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars

The home team has won six straight meetings between the Jags and the Titans. The last time a road team won a game in this series was four years ago. That would normally give the Jags the edge here, but Marcus Mariota is just a better QB than Blake Bortles. Jacksonville has lost four of their last five home games. Go with the Titans covering that almost even spread.

Point Spread: Titans -1.5
Pick ATS: Titans

Arizona Cardinals at Indianapolis Colts

Neither of these teams looked good in Week 1. The Cards lost 35-23 to the Lions, and the Colts had a big 46-9 loss to the Rams. Andrew Luck will be off the roster again this week, so the Colts will be hurting with Scott Tolzien at the helm. The bigger story here is the loss of Arizona’s best running back, David Johnson, who is out with a serious wrist injury. Even with the Cardinal’s run game impaired, they should still manage to cover against Indianapolis.

Point Spread: Cardinals -7.5
Pick ATS: Cardinals

Buffalo Bills at Carolina Panthers

Both teams are coming off Week 1 wins, but against the Jets and the 49ers. The Panthers are favorites here, partially due to the fact that Cam Newton’s team was looking confident in their first regular season game, and a confident Panthers team is capable of big wins. They’re coming home from a distant road trip to San Francisco, but if they can find some rhythm early and keep their defense sharp, Carolina should come away with the win here.

Point Spread: Panthers -7.5
Pick ATS: Panthers

New York Jets at Oakland Raiders

With a healthy Derek Carr and almost certainly playoff bound, the Oakland Raiders are huge favorites in Week 2 as they take on one of the worst teams in the league. Even though these two teams are completely unevenly matched, the Jets have some strength in their defense, so although they’ll lose this game, they may be able to cover that big spread. The Jets finished 5-11 last season, securing last place in the AFC East.

Point Spread Raiders -14
Pick ATS Jets

Miami Dolphins at Los Angeles Chargers

This will be the Dolphins’ first game of the season since their opener was postponed due to Hurricane Irma. The Chargers will be looking for their first win after dropping one to the Broncos in Week 1. The Dolphins have put together a better offense this year, and if Jay Cutler can get his act in gear, they could surprise their critics, and definitely stand a good chance of covering that spread.

Point Spread: Chargers -4.5
Pick ATS: Dolphins

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks

Here’s another uneven match for your Sunday viewing pleasure. Even though the ‘Hawks were beaten by the Packers at Lambeau in Week 1 and displayed some of their offensive weaknesses, they still put up a good fight against another elite team. The 49ers were beaten badly in Week 1 and are coming off a terrible record last season, going 2-14 to finish in last place in the NFC West. Expect Russell Wilson and company to try and put up some huge points at home and reset the tone for their season start.

Point Spread Seahawks -13.5
Pick ATS Seahawks

Dallas Cowboys at Denver Broncos

The Broncos are hosting the Cowboys in what should be one of the more exciting games of Week 2. The Cowboys spanked the Giants in Week 1, with great performances from Terrence Williams and Jason Witten. The Broncos blew a 24-7 lead in the last quarter of the game against the Chargers in Week 1, but with help from their outstanding defense, they managed to pull off the win. Because they are playing in Denver, I expect that the Broncos will cover.

Point Spread Cowboys -2
Pick ATS Broncos

Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons

When these two team met in the playoffs last season, it didn’t turn out well for the Packers. Last week against the Seahawks, Aaron Rodgers was left exposed too often and was sacked too many times. The Seahawks defense made sure the Packers didn’t put up any points in the first half of the game, something almost unheard of for Green Bay. The Falcons ability to pressure the Packers’ offense was on full display last year, and unless the Pack change things up drastically, they’ll take a loss here and Atlanta will easily cover that small spread.

Point Spread: Falcons -2.5
Pick ATS: Atlanta

Detroit Lions at New York Giants, Monday

Monday Night Football in Week 2 has the flailing Giants hosting the Detroit Lions. The Giants looked lost in their 19-3 loss to the Cowboys in Week 1, and without Odell Beckham Jr in the lineup, Eli Manning simply doesn’t have anyone reliable to throw to. On the other side, Matthew Stafford and the Lions had a fantastic game in Week 1, getting a convincing win against the Arizona Cardinals with a final score of 35-23. Detroit still has plenty of room to improve in their run game, but they’ll manage a win against New York this week.

Point Spread: TBA
Pick ATS: Lions
