NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs at Ottawa Senators

The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to snap a two-game skid when they host the banged up Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night.

Wild vs. Maple Leafs NHL Betting Odds

This wraps up the season series following the Wild’s 2-1 overtime win in Minnesota on Nov. 3. The contest snapped a five-game win streak for Toronto in head-to-head action. These teams generally play tight affairs, with three of the last four games decided in overtime.

This game pits one of the stronger home teams against the best road team in the NHL. The Maple Leafs have a solid 19-10 record at Scotiabank Arena this season, but they’ll be facing a Minnesota squad that tops the NHL at 18-5-3 on the road.

Both teams have matching 22-25-3 records on the Over/Under this season, but the trends point to a lower scoring game on Wednesday. The total has gone Under in seven of Toronto’s last nine games against Western Conference opponents, while the Wild have finished below the number in six of their last eight against the East.

Minnesota Wild

Jared Spurgeon, Joel Eriksson Ek, Marcus Foligno and Frederick Gaudreau scored for Minnesota in a 4-2 win over Chicago on Sunday, while Matt Boldy recorded a trio of assists. Filip Gustavsson turned aside 18 of 20 shots faced as the Wild claimed third place in the Central Division. It’s not all good news, however, as Minnesota announced leading scorer Kirill Kaprizov will have surgery for a lower body injury and miss a minimum of four weeks. It’s a significant hit as Kaprizov leads the team in goals (23), assists (27) points (52) and plus/minus (+19).

This is the first of a back-to-back for Minnesota, so Gustavsson is expected to get the start on Wednesday, while Quebec native Marc-Andre Fleury should start Thursday in Montreal. Prior to Sunday’s win in Chicago, Gustavsson had allowed at least four goals in five straight starts, going 0-4-0 in that span. In 33 starts this season, Gustavsson is 19-10-3 with a 2.61 goals-against average and .913 save percentage.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Bobby McMann scored the lone goal for the Leafs in a 2-1 loss in Ottawa on Saturday, while Joseph Woll allowed two goals on 23 shots. McMann has filled in on the top line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner in place of Matthew Knies, who is dealing with an upper-body injury. Knies and John Tavares (lower-body) have both skated at practice and are expected to join Toronto for the upcoming four-game Western Conference road trip, although they won’t play on Wednesday.

Anthony Stolarz (knee) has also returned to practice, but he likely won’t return to game action until after the 4 Nations Face-off. That means Woll should be in net against Minnesota. Woll was one of the better performers for the Leafs against Ottawa and kept the team in the game. In 26 appearances this season, Woll is 17-9-0 with a 2.67 GAA and .907 SV.
