It’s been all Californian opponents this week for the Minnesota Wild, who lost to the L.A. Kings before defeating the San Jose Sharks and, on Friday night, the Anaheim Ducks 5-2. The Wild’s strong start to the campaign has them within striking distance of the Winnipeg Jets in the Central Division. The scenery changes on Sunday when they travel to Chicago. The Blackhawks are still firmly in rebuilding mode. They were in Dallas to face the Stars on Thursday and lost 3-1.

Wild vs. Blackhawks NHL Betting Odds

Here is something you don’t see that often: the Wild have won each of the last 10 games versus the Blackhawks. Sunday will be their first clash of the 2024-25 campaign, but from 2022 through to the end of last season, Minnesota has taken all the spoils out of a possible 20 points over that span.

Get this: Chicago has scored more than one goal only once in the last six meetings. That was a 4-2 loss in April 2023. Basically, things go well for the Wild and poorly for the Blackhawks when they draw swords.

Betters can lick their chops this season when they see Minnesota on the NHL schedule. For one, they’re impressively reliable on the moneyline with a straight-up 10-2-2 record. Additionally, they’ve begun the season with a respectable 9-5 record against the spread. Granted, they’ve benefitted from besting struggling opponents like the Sharks, Ducks, and Penguins, but the Blackhawks fit the bill and they’re up next.

It wouldn’t be accurate to say Chicago is trustworthy on the money line with a 5-9-1, but there is a glimmer of optimism vis-à-vis the spread. The Blackhawks are 7-8 ATS, which isn’t great by any definition, but suggests that they are a sounder team than last year, albeit slightly. Of note, Chicago hasn’t been good at home with a poor 1-4 record at the United Center.

Minnesota Wild

Playing the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks back-to-back won’t get a pin on anyone’s bingo card as a tough stretch, but a bounce back was needed after the Kings beat them 5-1 earlier in the week.

Forward Kirill Kaprizov leads the NHL in points with 27 and is on a heater with six in his last two outings. He caused plenty of damage Friday in Anaheim by netting two goals (eighth and ninth), one of which was on the power play. In fact, the Wild are seventh in the league in scoring, netting 3.71 times per match. Goal distribution is excellent, with Matt Boldy’s eight goals, Mats Zuccarello’s six, Joel Eriksson Ek’s five, and Marco Rossi’ four.

Equally important is the bounce-back campaign netminder Filip Gustavsson is enjoying. He only gives up 2.30 goals per game and has a save percentage of .920. Even if the Wild give the nod to the backup, they’re well equipped with veteran Marc-André Fleury.

Chicago Blackhawks

For those who mostly pay attention to the Canadian clubs, the Chicago Blackhawks are akin to the Montreal Canadiens. An Original Six franchise with a proud history that has fallen on very, very hard times.

To be fair, they have a generation talent on their roster with sophomore Connor Bedard. He leads the team in points with 13 (three goals, 10 assists). The acquisition of Teuvo Teravainen was Carolina should, in theory, give the attack a bit of a jolt. Ryan Donato has had a decent start to the season with 10 points and leads the roster with seven goals. But the mixture of very young, inexperienced players with rather old ones – Nick Foligno is 37, Pat Maroon is 36 – is distorting results at the moment.

Chicago only nets 2.53 times per contest (26th in the NHL). Their netminding still ranks only 20th with a goals against average of 3.20. That isn’t Arvid Soderblom’s fault, though. He sports a .933 save percentage through four games.
