San Jose Sharks, 2021

The San Jose Sharks are off to a surprising 2-0 start this season. With wins against the Jets and Canadiens, they'll look to make it three for three against Canadian teams on Thursday night.

Two teams off to surprisingly strong starts meet Thursday night in the Canadian capital as the Ottawa Senators entertain the San Jose Sharks. Neither team is expected to compete for the Stanley Cup this season, but they’re off to a combined 4-1 start entering the first of two meetings this season. Ottawa is a razor-thin favourite as it looks to extend its season-opening winning streak on home ice to three games.

Sharks vs. Senators NHL Betting Odds

Sportsbooks don’t see much separating the Senators and Sharks (-108) in this one, and head-to-head history won’t help bettors here. These teams have met just three times since December 2016, with only one of those meetings coming at Canadian Tire Centre. Ottawa has won four of the previous five encounters overall, and the Sharks had lost six straight road games before cruising to a 5-0 win in Montreal on Tuesday night.

An ever-so-slim 53 percent majority of Sports Interaction bettors like the home team to earn the two points Thursday night, while 56 percent are siding with the O6 at -115 (while the U6 is installed at -105). It’s not surprising that the Sharks are generating interest on the Over, having averaged 4 ½ goals through their first two games. Yet, while San Jose went 30-23-3 O/U last season, the Senators were just 23-28-5 and are 0-3 so far this season.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks have spread the wealth so far this season, with eight players responsible for the team’s nine goals. And they’re led by a famous former Senator, with defenceman Erik Karlsson owning a share of the team lead with four points. A potent power play has been a major help, with the Sharks having scored four man-advantage goals already – and that could spell trouble for a Senators team that finished with the 10th-most penalty minutes last season.

Ottawa Senators

The Senators have been buoyed by the play of forward Chris Tierney, who has scored three goals through the team’s first three games. But sports bettors shouldn’t necessarily rush to load up on Tierney goal props; he has been extremely shot-lucky (with his three goals coming on just four attempts on net) and he averages just over 13 minutes of ice time per game, well below the standard you’re looking for when identifying goal prop targets.
