Could the Toronto Maple Leafs get Auston Matthews back in the lineup tonight. He says he feels ready to go for tonight's game in San Jose.
The Toronto Maple Leafs found their game on home ice with back-to-back wins over the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins. Now they will try to carry over the momentum from those victories when a tough opponent from the Western Conference visits midweek. Toronto will host the San Jose Sharks in a battle of potential Stanley Cup contenders on Wednesday night. The Sharks have struggled with consistency on the road all season and lost again on Tuesday night with a 3-2 overtime loss at Buffalo. Can San Jose break out of its funk on the road or will Toronto continue to roll on home ice? Here is a closer look at the matchup.

The Sharks have actually been one of the worst teams to bet on away from home so far this season. San Jose is 4-5-3 on the road, which translates to 4-8 for bettors. They are 3-9 on the puck line in away games.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have had no problem on home ice of late with five straight wins at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto owns a plus-24 goal differential this season, which is tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the best mark in the NHL. The Maple Leafs have had no problem on the puck line of late either, winning each of their last five home games by two goals or more.
San Jose Sharks
There have been plenty of questions about San Jose’s consistency so far this season. A big part of it has been the team’s goaltending. Martin Jones has posted a 3.01 goals-against average with a .891 save percentage. Meanwhile, Aaron Dell has delivered a 2.60 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage, but was shelled for six goals in his last start. Jones started and lost on Tuesday night, which means Dell is the projected started on Wednesday. The Sharks need better goaltending from both of their netminders if they are going to contend.
However, it’s hard to expect either of them to perform at a high level on the road against one of the league’s highest scoring teams in the second half of a back-to-back. Meanwhile, Erik Karlsson has finally found his scoring touch but San Jose needs more from some key contributors up front. Timo Meier, Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl have combined for two goals over the last couple of weeks. The Sharks will need those three players in particular to step up with strong performances at both ends of the ice in order to have a shot against Toronto on Wednesday night.

Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs have had no issues whatsoever with their goaltending of late as Frederik Andersen has been absolutely solid between the pipes. Andersen owns a sparkling 2.24 goals against average and a .931 save percentage this season. If he continues to perform at an elite level, Toronto will be tough to beat.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs could get a spark if Auston Matthews returns to the lineup. Matthews has been practicing but there has been no confirmation on when he will return. The offence has been humming along without him as Mitch Marner, John Tavares, Kasperi Kapenen and company continue to produce up front. The Maple Leafs are capable of scoring goals in bunches and it’s hard to imagine San Jose slowing them down regardless of whether Matthews plays or not. The smart money is on Toronto to win this Wednesday night in what could be a high scoring affair.
