Senators vs. Maple Leafs NHL Betting Odds

On Friday, Toronto superstar Auston Matthews was placed on injured reserve after being ruled out against the Red Wings. Matthews has been skating, however, and would be eligible to return on Tuesday if the team feels he is ready. But he didn’t practice Monday and is doubtful. The reigning Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner hasn’t had a typical start to the season with five goals and six assists in 13 games. Matthews led the NHL in goals scored for the third time in four seasons in 2023-24, tallying a career-high 69.

Tuesday is the first of three meetings between these rivals with Ottawa hosting on Jan. 25 and then the Senators returning to Toronto on March 15. The Sens won three of four last season and both at Scotiabank Arena. Claude Giroux (4G, 2A) and Tim Stutzle (1G, 5A) led Ottawa with six points each in the series. Joonas Korpisalo started in net for all three wins but is now with Boston, and Anton Forsberg lost his lone start, allowing four goals.

Matthews (1G, 3A) and William Nylander (2G, 2A) led Toronto with four points each in the series, but Matthews was minus-3 and Nylander minus-5. Martin Jones, now out of the NHL, was 1-2 in his three starts and Joseph Woll got into two games and had a 4.35 GAA and .871 SV.

The total has gone over in five of the past seven meetings.

Ottawa Senators

Ottawa snapped a two-game skid with a 3-2 overtime upset win in Boston on Saturday in a homecoming game for ex-Bruins Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark, who was traded to the Senators last offseason. But as Ullmark faced only 16 shots, he was not one of the three stars. Brady Tkachuk was the No. 1 with an assist and the winning goal just 21 seconds into OT. It was his eighth goal of the season and eighth career OT goal to pass Mike Fisher (seven) for the most in franchise history. It was also Tkachuk’s 94th career multi-point game to tie Marian Hossa for sixth-most in team history. Josh Norris (fifth) and Michael Amadio (first) also scored. Because it was such an emotional game Saturday for Ullmark, that likely means Anton Forsberg (3-3-0, 2.72 GAA, .905 SV) on Tuesday as they generally have been rotating in net. Forsberg has made seven appearances this year and allowed at least three goals in five and none in two. Ottawa is 1-4 in its past five on the road.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs have been shockingly good without the injured Auston Matthews over the years since he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and enter on a three-game winning streak all played without him after losing the previous two with Matthews. Mitch Marner and William Nylander each had a goal and assist in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Montreal as Marner extended his points streak to eight games. Marner scored his 10th career shorthanded goal and tied Rudy Migay and Lanny McDonald for the ninth most in Maple Leafs history. Nylander scored his 66th career power-play goal to pass Dave Keon for sole possession of sixth place in team history. And Morgan Rielly recorded his 400th career assist and became the third defenceman in franchise annals to reach the milestone. Toronto has now scored at least one power-play goal in four straight games after only three total PP goals through its first 12 games of the season. Joseph Woll was in net Saturday, but it’s likely back to Anthony Stolarz (6-2-2, 2.00 GAA, .903 SV) on Tuesday. Toronto is 5-1 in its past six at home.
