No rest for the weary. The Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks were in action on Saturday. Each suffered defeat, although the Oilers at least scraped for a point via a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings in overtime. The Ducks were at home and pestered the Philadelphia Flyers as best they could but fell 3-1.

Our NHL odds are putting a lot of chalk on the moneyline for Edmonton. They’re a -277 favourite whereas Anaheim is a +135 underdog (underduck?)

Oilers vs. Ducks NHL Betting Odds

Ducks fans won’t like this one bit: the Oilers have earned the full spoils in nine of the last 10 matches they played against their Californian foes. It gets worse.

The last time Anaheim skated to victory over the Alberta-based franchise was three years ago in December 2022. Since then, the Oilers have strung together seven wins. None were decided by fewer than two goals and that two-goal margin only happened twice. In the four most recent meetings, Edmonton netted eight, seven, five, and six goals.

Although Kris Knoblauch’s side has turned things around since their early season troubles, they haven’t done enough to impress betters. Edmonton is only 12-21-0 against the puck line this season. On the plus side, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are, as usual, in the NHL’s top 10 in scoring. Draisaitl is second with 53 points (24 goals, 29 helpers), and McDavid is sixth with 50 (15 goals, 35 apples). Both are enjoying 10-game point streaks.

Incidentally, the Ducks are precisely the sort of team that betters like to seek out. They may only be 12-15-4 in the standings, but that doesn’t matter when they sport a resplendent 21-10-0 ATS tally. That said, their 3-7-1 straight-up record in their last 10 indicates that, while slightly better than last season, the Ducks haven’t solved all their problems yet. Of note: goalie John Gibson was listed as Out on Saturday due to an illness.

Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton set off on a road trip in the City of Angels on Saturday to face a familiar foe: the Kings, with whom they’ve clashed in the first round of the postseason three years in a row.

For once, L.A. got the better of their rivals. The Oilers definitely made them earn it, though. Edmonton struck first when Kasperi Kapanen patted home an easy rebound midway through the first period for a 1-0 lead. That wouldn’t last as the Kings retorted with a pair of goals before the break– one via former Oiler Warren Foegele. The middle frame belonged to the visitors, as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins sniped a shot on the power play to level the terms and Viktor Arvidson cashed in on another opportunity for his fourth of the season and make it 3-2.

Things didn’t work out for the Oilers on this day. With the score tied 3-3, McDavid fed Zach Hyman  in front of the net in the dying seconds, but the latter’s shot was brilliantly repelled by Darcy Kuemper. In overtime, Quinton Byfield got his brace via a smart wrister that fooled Stuart Skinner high. Make the final a 4-3 OT loss for the Oilers.

Anaheim Ducks

The sight of the Ducks hosting the Philadelphia Flyers was visually curious on Saturday, given that both uniforms are draped in shades of orange.

Speaking of oranges, it was the Flyers who put their vitamins to good use courtesy of a hard-fought 3-1 win. It wasn’t for lack of trying on the part of the Ducks, who rifled 33 shots on Philly’s net, but could only outduel Samuel Ersson once. That happened late in the second period when Troy Terry wristed a shot from the left that tied the score at 1-1.

Anaheim keeper Lukas Dostal has been mostly dependable this season, but he’ll want Philadelphia’s game-winning goal back. Morgan Frost backhanded the puck from a bad angle and it ricocheted off Dostal’s stick and in. Anaheim pressed late but was undone by a goal into their empty net.
