Toronto and Detroit were both in action on Thursday night with different results. The Leafs slipped past Anaheim 3-2, while the Red Wings fell 4-1 in Philadelphia.

Toronto opened as a -175 favourite to win on the NHL odds., with the total set at 6.0.

Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings NHL Betting Odds

This is the second meeting between the teams this season and the first of two head-to-heads in the month of December. The Leafs won 3-1 at home on November 8, with John Tavares scoring twice for Toronto. Last season, Detroit took two of three games, with each contest decided by two or less goals.

Both teams have identical 17-12 records against the spread this season. That puts each team in the top 10 of cover options, so something will obviously have to give on Saturday.

They also share a trend of lower scoring games, with Toronto and Detroit each playing the Under 17 times. The total has gone Under in five of the Leafs’ last six games and four of the Wings’ last five.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Max Pacioretty had two goals and an assist against the Ducks, while John Tavares had two helpers and William Nylander had one goal. Getting on the board early has been huge for Toronto this season as they have the best winning percentage in the NHL when scoring first at .893 (12-1-1). The team is also getting healthier, with Pacioretty and Jake McCabe both recently returning from injury.

The main concern is now Anthony Stolarz, who suffered a lower-body injury on Thursday. Stolarz is listed as day-to-day, so Joseph Woll will get the start in net on Saturday. Woll made 19 saves on 20 shots in relief of Stolarz on Thursday. The 26-year-old has won seven of his last eight games, while positing a season record of 8-3-0 with a 2.16 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.

Detroit Red Wings

Detroit’s three-goal loss to Philadelphia on Thursday is a little deceiving as the Flyers scored two empty-net goals. Ben Chiarot had the only Wings goal, while Cam Talbot made 32 saves. The game may have been closer than the scoreboard indicated, but it doesn’t do much for Detroit, who have now lost seven of their last eight games. Offence has been tough to come by outside of the trio of Dylan Larkin (12 goals), Alex DeBrincat (12 goals) and Lucas Raymond (11 goals). The Red Wings rank 28th in the NHL with an average of just 2.52 goals per game.

Talbot suffered a lower-body injury at practice on Friday, so Ville Husso will get the start in net against Toronto. Husso is winless on the year with an 0-4-2 record, a 3.74 GAA and an .870 SV. He’s allowed at least three goals in six of seven appearances this season, but he’ll be the No. 1 option with Talbot out and Alex Lyon on injured reserve (lower-body).
