Maple Leafs vs. Predators NHL Betting Odds

The job status of second-year Nashville coach Andrew Brunette, an Ontario native, is in major jeopardy with the Predators all but assured of missing the playoffs after totalling 99 regular-season points in 2023-24 and making the postseason in Brunette’s first year.

The Preds, largely sellers ahead of the March 7 trade deadline, were expected to be better this campaign because they won the free-agent bidding last summer for future Hall of Famer and Markham native Steven Stamkos on a four-year, $32 million (US) contract, while also adding fellow forward Jonathan Marchessault and blueliner Brady Skjei. All of them have disappointed. Nashville is above .500 at home, one of the better hockey environments in the USA, but a brutal 8-21-5 on the road.

Toronto eyes the season sweep as it beat Nashville, 3-2 at Scotiabank Arena on Dec. 4. Marchessault had the game’s first goal at 5:26 of the first but then no goals at all until the third when Toronto scored three times in the first 5:06, twice by Auston Matthews. Joseph Woll was in net for the Leafs and Juuse Saros for the Predators.

The Leafs are 6-4 in the past 10 meetings overall, and the under has hit in five straight.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto won its third game in a row Thursday, 4-3 at the New York Rangers. John Tavares was the No. 1 star with two goals and an assist, while blueliner Jake McCabe had three assists. Tavares reached 1,100 career points, the eighth active player to reach the milestone and the 13th first overall pick to get there since the NHL Draft was introduced in 1963. William Nylander had an assist to reach 600 career points in his 672nd career game, the fastest active Swedish player to reach the plateau. Nylander also became the ninth player in Maple Leafs history to record 600 career points.

Auston Matthews had his two-game goals streak snapped. He remains two points shy of becoming the fourth player in Maple Leafs history with at least 350 career road points for the franchise. Joseph Woll had started the first two of the streak, but Anthony Stolarz was in net vs. the Blueshirts – which likely means back to Woll here. He is 12-7-0 with a 2.96 GAA on the road this season. Toronto is 12-6 in its past 18 road games.

Nashville Predators

The Predators appear to have officially mailed it in on a four-game losing streak and dominated in back-to-back 4-1 home losses by St. Louis and Anaheim. Steven Stamkos had the lone goal Thursday vs. the Ducks, his 23rd of the season for an early 1-0 lead, but backup netminder Justus Annunen gave up three goals in the second. It was Stamkos’ 578th career goal to pass Mark Recchi (577) for 22nd place on the NHL’s all-time goals list. Jari Kurri (601) sits in 21st, so that will have to wait until next season.

Fellow forward Filip Forsberg remains one assist shy of tying David Legwand (189) for the second-most assists at home by a Predators player. Former Norris Trophy-winning blueliner Roman Josi tops the list with 274 but hasn’t played since Feb. 25 and is on injured reserve. It should be No. 1 Juuse Saros in net Saturday, and he’s 11-11-3 at home with a 2.73 GAA and .898 SV. The under is 6-0 in Nashville’s past six.
