The Toronto Maple Leafs have continued their hot-and-cold ways as they’ve now followed up their three-game losing streak with a three-game winning streak. They easily handled the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night, winning 6-2, but the Oilers are one of the worst teams in the league. The challenge will be much stiffer on Thursday when they visit the New York Islanders, who currently lead the Metropolitan Division.

Maple Leafs vs Islanders Betting Analysis

The Maple Leafs are normally a strong road team (19-8-3) but they’ve lost two straight away games and three of five. They are still 6-0 in their last six road games versus teams with winning records on home ice this season. Toronto is also 11-3 in its last 14 games listed as a favorite between -110 and -150 odds and 5-2 in their last seven games against Eastern Conference opponents.

Meanwhile, the Islanders have been outstanding on home ice so far this season with an 18-8-4 record. The Islanders have lost back-to-back games on home ice only once so far this season. It will be interesting to see if they can avoid it happening again following a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs will need to overcome a tight turnaround after hosting the Oilers on Wednesday night. Toronto will also be playing its third game in four nights. The Maple Leafs are 8-1 in their last nine games when playing their third game in four nights overall, so this doesn’t seem to bother them as much as one might think.

John Tavares will be in the spotlight in his return to Nassau as he was their franchise’s superstar before signing with Toronto last summer. Tavares, who leads Toronto with 35 goals this season, is also second on the team with 66 points. Meanwhile, the Islanders have had a really tough to generating offence Their 179 goals scored are the second-fewest in the Eastern Conference.

Offence is also the key for the Maple Leafs as they have won 11 straight when they’ve scored three goals or more. They have just one win this season when scoring two goals or less.

New York Islanders

The Islanders will certainly be motivated to prove that they can beat the Maple Leafs with Tavares lining up opposite of them. New York has been one of the most improved teams in the NHL this season thanks to becoming the league’s best defensive team under head coach Barry Trotz. Their 149 goals allowed are the fewest in the NHL.

The Isles have struggled recently, though, as they’ve dropped three of four coming into this game. Much of that can be attributed to a challenge Canadian West Coast road trip. They’ll be the more rested team of the two as they were off on Wednesday.

Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss have combined for a .929 save percentage so far this season so they should be in good hands between the pipes. Lehner is projected to get the start and he has a sparkling 1.83 goals-against average and .932 save percentage at home.
