Islanders vs. Maple Leafs NHL Betting Odds

A handful of NHL head coaches already have been fired this season with Detroit’s Derek Lalonde the latest last week. The Islanders are another big disappointment in the Eastern Conference, but Patrick Roy is safe as head coach because he’s a legend and this is his first full season as the Hall of Famer was hired last January to replace Lane Lambert, who had 19-15-11 mark that is a lot better than what New York has now.

It is expected that the Islanders will be active ahead of the trade deadline but likely more as a seller. It would be a shock if forward Brock Nelson isn’t moved as he is a pending unrestricted free agent in the final season of a six-year deal worth $6 million (US) annually.

Tuesday marks the second of three meetings between these teams, and they conclude the season series at New York on Thursday. On Dec. 21, the Isles were 6-3 surprise winners at Scotiabank Arena. Bo Horvat had two a goal and two assists, and New York scored three times in the first and three in the third. Ilya Sorokin was in net for the Isles, while Joseph Woll was for the Leafs, who didn’t have star forward Auston Matthews due to injury.

The Islanders are 6-4 in the past 10 meetings and the over-under is 5-5.

New York Islanders

New York has alternated losses and wins over its past five following a 3-2 loss in Pittsburgh on Sunday in the second of a back-to-back. Anders Lee (16th goal of season) and Bo Horvat (10th) had the Islanders goals in the third to make things interesting after they trailed 3-0. New York has earned a three-goal, third-period comeback win only seven times in franchise history but not since Nov. 16, 2019, at Philadelphia.

Marcus Hogberg got his first start of the season in net but it should be back to No. 1 Ilya Sorokin here, and the Russian is 11-11-4 with a 2.96 GAA and .898 SV on the season. Sunday marked only the second time in the past 339 games a goaltender not named Ilya Sorokin or Semyon Varlamov started for the Isles. Varlamov is on injured reserve. New York is 2-8 in its past 10 road games.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto lost for the third time in four games on Saturday, 5-2 at home to Washington playing again without superstar Auston Matthews, who will miss a fifth straight game Tuesday with an upper-body injury despite being a partial participant in Monday’s practice session. John Tavares (18th of season) and Bobby McMann (10th) had the goals vs. the Caps. Tavares scored a game-opening goal for the 78th time in his career, and the 34-year-old became the oldest Maple Leafs player with a seven-game point streak since 41-year-old Joe Thornton in 2021.

Matt Murray was in net Saturday in the second of a back-to-back but already has been sent back down, so it should be Joseph Woll (10-6-0, 2.57 GAA, .909 SV) on Tuesday. Blueliner Oliver Ekman-Larsson (1G, 12A) is iffy with an illness. The over is 7-0 in Toronto’s past seven games.
