Both the Panthers and Islanders were two teams that started their seasons out very well but faded heading into the break. Which team is the best bet to get the win and an early jump in the series?

Panthers vs. Islanders NHL Playoff Odds

A lot of the games in this series have trended under as seven of the last eight meetings have stayed under the number. That includes all three matchups so far this season, which resulted in scorelines of 3-2, 2-1 and 3-1.

The Panthers were just 13-20 this season when facing a team with a winning record, having dropped nine of their last 13 in that scenario. The Isles were slightly better overall – going 14-16 against winning teams – but dropped 11 of their last 14 in this spot.

Florida Panthers

The Panthers-Islanders showdown is a matchup of two teams that mirror each other. The Panthers started the year 28-16-5 and were viewed as a surprise team in the Eastern Conference. However, they went into the break with just seven wins in their final 20 games, so it’s unclear which team shows up. The key to their lack of success has to be goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who has been subpar this season. Previously one of the league’s top goaltenders, Bobrovsky has a lofty 3.23 GAA and awful .900 save percentage. The Panthers won’t go far unless that changes.

The good news is he did play well against the Islanders this season. He posted a .938 save percentage in both meetings, stopping 61 of 65 shots. He’ll have to perform like that in this series for the Panthers to advance.

New York Islanders

The Isles were one of the early surprises in the Eastern Conference when they started the year 22-7-2. Many viewed it as a continuation of their success in 2018-19 when they made an impressive run in the playoffs. However, the team hit the wall in December and faded the rest of the way. They went into the break having lost 24 of their final 37 contests. The question is can they regain their early-season magic?

The Isles did win two of three meetings with the Panthers and they did so by forcing them to play their defensive style. The Panthers finished the regular season sixth in goals-per-game at 3.30 but mustered just four goals in three games against the Isles. The Isles finished the year 10th in goals-per-game allowed and forced the Panthers to play at their pace. I would look for more of that in this series as the Islanders come out with a good showing in Game 1 and get the early series lead.
