Although there were only three minor penalties in the game, there was a spirited scrap in the midway point of the first period between Matthew Tkachuk and Corey Perry. Perhaps that animosity continues in game two.

Flames vs. Stars Betting Analysis

The Flames now hold a 1-0 series lead in this best of seven first round. In game two, the Flames are -115 favourites to take a 2-0 series lead. The Stars are listed at -105 to win game two.

The Stars were slight favourites to win the series checking in at -110 but that has changed. Calgary is now listed as -215 favourites to win this opening round matchup. The Stars are +153 to come back and take the series.

Interesting note, these two franchises have never met in the post season. In three regular season games, the Flames have the edge with two wins in those three contests.

Calgary Flames

Dillon Dube established a great start for the Flames in the opening game of the series scoring a pair of first period goals. It was Dube’s second and third goals since the NHL restart, and provided the Flames with some much needed secondary scoring.

The Flames lost that lead until defenceman Rasmus Andersson’s second period tally which was  the game winner.

The Flames power-play continued where it left off in the first round scoring a goal in their only game one opportunity. Through five games, the team has six goals for a percentage of 33.3 percent. That mark is tops in the NHL just ahead of the Edmonton Oilers who were eliminated in the qualifying round.

Cam Talbot was the games second star stopping 25-of-27 shots he faced including a Joe Pavelski opportunity with only 10 seconds remaining in the game on the power-play with the Stars skating on a 6-on-4 chance.

Interesting note, Milan Lucic seems to have found the fountain of youth in this restart. In four games against the Jets, he netted a goal and three assists. On Tuesday, he recorded another assist.

Dallas Stars

The Stars were outshot 12-7 in the first period of game one and dug themselves in a hole early in the game. The second period was a good turnaround period for the club with Denis Gurianov and Jamie Benn scoring nine seconds apart. It was the quickest they had ever scored a pair of goals in a playoff game. Unfortunately, momentum was lost after the pair of goals.

Goaltender Anton Khudobin was a surprise starter in game one. In 10 seasons he has never started a post season game until this year. One wonders the health of Ben Bishop although Head Coach Rick Bowness said all players on the roster were deemed healthy.

The Stars averaged 2.58 goals per game (26th in the NHL) in the regular season and scored just five times (once on the shootout) in three round-robin games. Scoring is definitely an issue for this team in the early part of August.
