Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers Prediction, NHL Odds

If it feels strange that the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers will take to the ice for another chapter of their iconic rivalry on a Sunday, at least most people have Monday off courtesy of a statutory holiday. Adding spice to the matter is that both are coming off games on Saturday. The Flames hosted and defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 to improve to 2-0. The Oilers were upset by the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2, thus dropping to 0-2.

Our NHL odds refuse to waver from the Oilers, who are -1.5 favourites for tonight’s match.

Flames vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

These interdivisional foes meet a lot on a seasonal basis. Given the different trajectory these clubs have been on since their playoffs meetup in May 2022, it’s no surprise that Edmonton has won five of the seven most recent tilts (they also won that postseason series 4-1).

Of note, the only two times the Flames downed the Oilers over that span was as the away side. Last February they burned Edmonton 6-3 at Rogers Place. As a matter of fact, the road teams have done quite well for themselves. We have to go back to that playoff matchup for the last time the Oilers won at Rogers Place. Since then, the only time they earned the spoils in front of their fans was the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium last October.

As for how these teams are doing against the puckline, ATS results have mirror straight-up ones. Calgary is 2-0 whereas Edmonton is 0-2.

Calgary Flames

Casual observers would be forgiven for getting the Flames and Oilers confused through two games. It has been Calgary, rather than Edmonton, who has fired on all cylinders this week.

After leaving Vancouver with a wild 6-5 win on opening night, they held their home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. The pucks kept finding their way into the net courtesy of a 6-3 win. Things are going so well for the Flames that their opener saw the disc inadvertently bounce into Philly’s net off Jonathan Huberdeau’s (second) shoulder in the first period. Special teams were huge on this night, with both MacKenzie Weegar (second ) and Nazem Kadri (first) netting on the power play – not to mention the Flyers’ shorthanded goal in the second period.

The final score belied the fact that netminder Dustin Wolf was extremely busy, repelling 37 of the 40 shots he faced. He held the fort in the first two periods as Calgary took advantage of their precious opportunities.

Edmonton Oilers

The start to the 2024-25 season really is beginning to resemble that of 2023-24. After falling flat to Winnipeg 6-0 earlier in the week, the Oilers were outclassed 5-2 by the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

When it rains, it pours, and Edmonton is getting a lot of precipitation this October. The club has conceded an alarming 11 goals through two contests and only scored twice. Corey Perry (first) and Leon Draisaitl (first, power play) finally netted for their side (Jeff Skinner got his first Oilers point via an assist), but the bigger issues are on the blue line and in net. Just as. Stuart Skinner failed to impress in his debut, and neither did Calvin Pickard, who got the easier of the tasks by facing an apparently lowly Chicago outfit. Five pucks got past him on only 20 shots – although one was a beautiful, deadly wrister from Connor Bedard.

It’s time for the Oilers to kick things into a higher gear. What better opportunity than at home with their arch-rivals in town?
