Pardon the pun, but the Calgary Flames have cooled off since their hot start to the season in October and November. Their most recent setback was a miserable week in St. Louis for a two-match set versus the Blues, both of which they lost. On the other hand, the Winnipeg Jets continue to soar. Saturday is the continuation of a critical homestand, with their most recent game a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken.

Our NHL odds have more faith in the host Jets, pinning them as significant -244 favourites. Calgary is a +185 underdog.

Flames vs. Jets NHL Betting Odds

This is the second time this season that the Flames and Jets will butt heads. The first was back in October in Alberta, which Winnipeg captured courtesy of a 5-3 victory. That was the Jets’ second consecutive win over the Flames overall. That said, it was Calgary who took the season series 2-1 last year.

One can argue that the Flames are hanging in in the Western Conference playoff race. On the hand that’s true seeing as they are currently ninth, just one spot out of a Wild Card slot. On the other hand, the discrepancy is six points. Not insurmountable, but not easy either. Connor Zary lower-body injury will keep him out of commission for an indefinite amount of time, which won’t help either. All that said, betters can at least rest assured that the Flames are 23-21-0 ATS.

Suffice to say that the Jets aren’t experiencing nearly as many issues as their Albertan counterparts. As of this writing, they are the top club in the league, at least based on wins (the New Jersey Devils also have 65 points). Winnipeg has won three in a row, possesses the best goal differential in the NHL (plus-54) and, once again, the best netminder in Connor Hellebuyck: 1.97 GAA, .929 save percentage, 28 wins (all tops).

Calgary Flames

Thursday was an opportunity to bounce back from a narrow 2-1 defeat to the St. Louis Blues earlier in the week. No travelling, just refocus, hop back on the saddle and face the same team again.

It didn’t go according to plan. St. Louis was up 3-0 by the first intermission, with the visiting Flames looking outclassed by a considerable margin. Dustin Wolf was not to blame on the first goal, which happened quickly off a turnover, but he honestly could have repelled goals two and three. That the Flames finished the match with 29 shots on target was courtesy of vastly superior efforts in the middle and final frames of regulation, although it only resulted in a single goal from Yegor Sharangovich (assisted by Jakob Pelletier and Rory Kerins). Flames lose, 4-1.

To that point, scoring is an issue in Calgary. They only net 2.59 times per game, no better than 28th league-wide. Jonathan Huberdeau leads them with 32 points (18 goals, 14 assists), but hasn’t tallied in three straight.

Winnipeg Jets

Not every night is going to be a highlight reel factory, even for the best sides. Such was the case on Thursday at home against the Seattle Kraken.

The visiting Kraken largely outplayed the hosts throughout the opening 20 minutes, and their pressure eventually paid off for a 1-0 lead. However, these are the Jets, who aren’t in the habit of wilting this season. Although they didn’t necessarily dominate  the proceedings, they made the right plays at the right time to turn the tide for a 2-1 victory.

Mark Scheifele levelled the terms in the second period with a powerful shot off a rebound, and Dylan DeMelo netted the winner with under a minute remaining thanks to excellent Jets forechecking.
