What has happened to the Anaheim Ducks? They had home-ice advantage and momentum going into the playoffs while the San Jose Sharks had neither.
As we move into Game 4 at the SAP Center on Wednesday, the Ducks have been thoroughly outplayed in this series and are coming off an 8-1 thrashing on Monday night. Can they even extend this series one more game or is it lights out on Wednesday?

Nobody expected Anaheim to get swept by San Jose in its first round series. After all, the Ducks are one of the deeper teams in the NHL and they finished with 101 points in the regular season. However, the Sharks have won three in a row in the playoffs and six of seven against Anaheim dating back to the regular season. They are now 23-8 against their division.
The Ducks are 27-15 when revenging a loss versus an opponent this season but that hasn’t matter much in the last two games.
Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks were one of the hottest teams in the NHL down the stretch with a 10-1-1 record to close out the regular season. More importantly, Anaheim seemed to finally be getting healthy. However, the Ducks have struggled to match San Jose’s speed in the opening round and it has really hurt them at both ends of the ice. John Gibson, who registered a 2.43 goals against average and a .926 save percentage during the regular season, owns a 4.17 GAA and an .882 save percentage in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan Kesler, Cory Perry and Adam Henrique are all still looking for their first goals of the playoffs after combining for just three points through their first three games. The Ducks have a total of three goals in three games.
Anaheim needs to do a better job containing the Sharks speed in order to have a chance in Game 4 but it won’t be easy. Gibson will need to be at his absolute best in order to give the Ducks a chance.

San Jose Sharks
The Sharks have had no trouble at all scoring five-on-five in this series. Evander Kane, who was added before the NHL trade deadline for a second round pick, has three goals in as many contests. Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture have led the way with five points each in the series. However, it’s not just the big guns that have done damage for San Jose. Joonas Donskoi, Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier and Marcus Sorensen all have three points each in the series. When you consider that Getzlaf is the only player on the Ducks that has registered three points, it illustrates just how much Anaheim has struggled so far.
Meanwhile, Martin Jones has been excellent between the pipes for the Sharks with a 1.00 goals against average and a .970 save percentage through three straight wins. As long as Jones remains locked in on Wednesday, San Jose should be able to complete the sweep with a fourth straight win and book its spot in the Western Conference semi-final round.
