The Calgary Flames had the unenviable task of facing the top player in the NHL in their season opener – but things should be a whole lot easier Monday night as they host the Anaheim Ducks. Calgary dropped a 5-2 decision in Edmonton thanks largely to three goals from Oilers mega-star Connor McDavid. Yet, while Anaheim has done well to split their first two games, they should present a much easier challenge for the Flames in their home opener.

Calgary is a -200 favourite to win on the NHL odds, with a total of 5.5.

Ducks vs. Flames NHL Odds

The Flames are already well on their way to besting last year’s performance – at least, from an odds perspective. Calgary was a favourite of -200 just twice last season, going 1-1 in those outings. They’re overwhelming faves in this one, but are a modest 8-6 straight up in their previous 14 games when installed at -200 or better. The Ducks, on the other hand, are a miserable 2-18 SU in their previous 20 games when facing +200 or worse odds.

Given that last statistic, it’s a bit surprising that only 69 per cent of Sports Interaction bettors are siding with the home team – but it’s possible the one-sided loss to Edmonton has rattled Calgary supporters. The total trend is even less of a consensus, with 57 per cent leaning toward the U5.5 at -115 (compared with the O5.5 at -105). The Flames (21-28-7 O/U) and Ducks (21-33-2 O/U) were two of the best Under plays in the league last season.

Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim is going to need to rely on stalwart goaltending and strong defence to end its playoff drought – and both have come through marvellously through the first two games of the season. The Ducks have a 2-1 loss to Minnesota and a 4-1 win over Winnipeg on their ledger to date – and while the D would like to tighten things up, it has been bailed out by a sensational effort from Anthony Stolarz and John Gibson, who have combined to stop 74 of 77 shots.

Calgary Flames

Jacob Markstrom’s 2020-21 season was one of the high points for the Flames, as he boasted a full-season career-low 2.66 goals-against average, while finishing with a 22-19-2 record and three shutouts. But he’s off to a rough start to his 2021-22 campaign, torched for four goals on 32 shots against the rival Oilers. He didn’t get much help in the opener, either, though you can hardly put the blame on a hard-luck Calgary offensive attack that fired 47 shots but finished with just two goals.
