The Lightning are -125 favorites on the NHL odds with the Capitals +105 and a high over-under of 6.5 goals.

Capitals vs. Lightning NHL Playoffs Odds

This is the first “seeding” game for the Lightning, who enter this round-robin format as the East’s No. 2 team, and the Capitals, who are No. 3. Tampa Bay will then play No. 1 Boston on Aug. 5 and No. 4 Philadelphia on Aug. 8, while Washington will face the Flyers on Aug. 6 and Bruins on Aug. 9. Once all the “seeding” games are complete, that will determine the official top-four seeds in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Lightning are +203 to earn the conference’s top seed and the Capitals +329. Washington won all three regular-season meetings. The over is 5-1 in the past six meetings.

Washington Capitals

Washington (90 points) won the Metropolitan Division for the fifth straight season, but the shutdown might have come at the perfect time for the Caps as the Flyers were just one point behind and playing much better hockey. That Washington is playing at a neutral site the rest of the season could be ideal because the Caps were a stellar 23-10-3 away from home.

The incomparable Alex Ovechkin won an amazing ninth Rocket Richard Trophy this season by tying for the league’s goal lead at 48 with Boston’s David Pastrnak – Ovi did it in two fewer games. John Carlson is likely to win the Norris Trophy as he leads all blueliners in points (75) and assists (60) and is fourth in goals (15). Top netminder Braden Holtby didn’t have a great season by his standards, going 25-14-6 with a 3.11 GAA and .897 SV and without a shutout. The Caps are 10-3 in the past 13 games as underdogs.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Arguably no team benefitted from the shutdown more than Tampa Bay (92 points), which finished eight points behind Boston in the Atlantic Division and was highly unlikely to catch the Bruins. Had this been a normal playoff setup, the Lighting would have faced Atlantic third-place finisher Toronto in the first round of the playoffs.

Where the Lightning really benefited was with superstar forward Steven Stamkos. He had core muscle surgery March 2 and was to miss the rest of the regular season and likely at least the first round of the playoffs. The Markham native should be good to go Monday. He was second on the team with 29 goals and 66 points in 57 games. Andrei Vasilevskiy, the reigning Vezina winner, led the NHL with 35 wins and is a finalist again but probably will not win. Tampa Bay is 0-5 in its past five playoff games as a favourite.
