The Vancouver Canucks might not be ready to compete with the NHL’s elite teams, but through the first two games of the new season, they sure look a lot more entertaining than in recent years. The Canucks continue their season-opening six-game road swing Saturday night in Detroit, and are coming off back-to-back shootout results: a 3-2 loss to Edmonton, followed by a 5-4 triumph in Philadelphia. The Red Wings lost a wild 7-6 decision in their season opener.

Vancouver is a -120 favourite to win on the NHL odds, with a total of 5.5.

Canucks vs. Red Wings NHL Odds

Vancouver comes in as a slight favourite as it looks to extend its season-opening points streak to three games. To even be in this position represents major progress for a Canucks team that finished last in the North Division last year while going just 10-17-1 away from Rogers Arena. The Red Wings earned 12 of their 19 victories last season at home but have lost four of the previous six head-to-head meetings between the teams.

Sports Interaction bettors are siding with the Canucks at a 69 per cent clip heading into this one, with a whopping 97 per cent of the betting public taking the O5.5 at -114 (compared with the U5.5 at -106). Given how prolific both teams have been through their first action of the season, it’s easy to see why the Over is getting hammered here. But let’s not forget that the Red Wings were a sizzling 32-20-4 to the Under last season, while Vancouver was 28-23-5.

Vancouver Canucks

It’s nice to have a superstar or two, but the Canucks will need a balanced offensive effort if they hope to cash in on their +1000 odds of winning the Pacific Division title. And so far, things are going as well as hoped, with six different Canucks having scored a goal and seven players averaging a point per game to date. J.T. Miller has been the offensive lynchpin with four points in two games, and is an interesting +249 option to score Saturday.

Detroit Red Wings

Well, that’s one way to kick off a campaign. Tyler Bertuzzi erupted for a career-best four goals but it still wasn’t enough as the Red Wings fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning in what has been the most entertaining game of the early season to date. Bertuzzi scored five goals in nine games with the Red Wings last season and should be a popular play on the player prop market; he’s a -121 option to record at least one point, and installed at -120 to be held off the scoresheet.
