Nothing is going right for the Washington Capitals as they look to end a dreadful stretch against the visiting Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.
The Capitals are coming off a 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins, the eighth loss in nine games for the defending Stanley Cup champions. But they’re in great position to turn things around against a Canucks team playing the tail end of a road back-to-back and coming off a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

Washington has won six of the previous seven meetings between the teams, and oddsmakers like the Capitals to extend that run Tuesday night. But the Capitals are in a real tailspin, having allowed six or more goals in four of their previous seven games. Yet, that pales in comparison to the Canucks’ trends heading into this one. Vancouver has just 19 wins in its past 58 road games and is 2-10 in its past 12 on the back end of games on consecutive days.
The total for this one is on the high end at 6.5, which isn’t surprising given the Capitals’ recent defensive woes and their potent offence. But while Washington has been a predictably good over option (having gone 20-8-2 O/U in its last 30 games against Western Conference opponents), the Canucks are headed in the opposite direction, entering Tuesday having converted the under in four straight road games and four of five vs. Metropolitan Division foes.
Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks might be without one of their most dependable defencemen for Tuesday’s trip to the U.S. capital. Alex Edler was forced to leave Monday’s loss to the Flyers after slamming face-first into the ice and leaving bloodied midway through the third period. But while Edler’s absence would be a big one, the Canucks’ inconsistent offence is an even larger problem. Vancouver has scored one or fewer goals in four of its past six road games.

Washington Capitals
Five appears to be the magic number for NHL goals leader Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals. Ovechkin has an incredible 20 goals in 17 games this season when finishing with five or more shots on goal – and even more significantly, Washington is 12-3-2 SU in those contests. And despite being embroiled in their worst slump of the season, the Capitals have earned points in five straight games (3-0-2 SU) when Ovechkin fires five or more shots.
