The Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks are both struggling as they meet Thursday night in Vancouver’s lone trip of the season to the Windy City. The Hawks opened as short favourites on the NHL odds with a total of 6.0 goals.

Canucks vs. Blackhawks NHL Betting Odds

It’s very rare for NHL coaches to get fired this early in the season, but don’t rule out the Blackhawks dumping embattled coach and Alberta native Jeremy Colliton, should they fall to 0-5 with a loss here. He was booed quite heartily during Tuesday’s home-opening loss to the Islanders. Thing is, he was handpicked by Chicago GM Stan Bowman, who is on an equally hot seat. Bowman certainly expected more with some big-name acquisitions in the off-season such as Marc-Andre Fleury and Seth Jones.

As noted above, this is the Canucks’ lone visit of the season to Chicago, with the Blackhawks in Vancouver on Nov. 21. Because of the unusual divisional realignment last season, the clubs didn’t play. In the 2019-20 season, the Canucks won two of three but lost 5-2 in Chicago.

The underdog is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings. The over is 9-2-2 in the previous 13.

Vancouver Canucks

Could Vancouver be caught looking ahead to Saturday’s first-ever game at new rival Seattle? The NHL did the Canucks no favours with a season-opening five-game trip. We projected them to lose 3-2 in Buffalo on Tuesday and they lost 5-2. Vancouver led 2-1 at the end of one period on goals by Bo Horvat (first of season) and Justin Dowling (first).

Thatcher Demko couldn’t make it hold up though, as he allowed four goals on 42 shots – his second in a row allowing four. Star Brock Boeser made his season debut off injury and had three shots but was minus-1 in 19:09. Blueliners Quinn Hughes and Travis Hamonic didn’t play. Hughes might Thursday, but Hamonic has been placed on a temporary leave of absence. Vancouver is 8-17 in its past 25 as a road underdog.

Chicago Blackhawks

Chicago not only is winless, it has just one loss by a single goal. The Hawks were beaten 4-1 in their home opener Tuesday by the Islanders. New York led 1-0 entering the third but then scored three in the first 11 minutes or so. Chicago’s lone goal was the first of the season from the awesomely named MacKenzie Entwistle.

Future Hall of Fame netminder Marc-Andre Fleury is 0-3-0 with a 5.63 goals-against average and .840 save percentage. Franchise icon Jonathan Toews, a potential future Hall of Famer himself, doesn’t have a point and is minus-4. Winger Mike Hardman left Tuesday after being checked into the boards and is iffy for Thursday. Chicago is 1-6 in its past seven at home.
