Canadiens vs. Kings NHL Betting Odds

Most teams in the NHL, especially those in the Eastern Conference, play a California Swing where they face the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks all in a row. That’s where Montreal is in concluding that swing tonight in L.A., although the schedule-makers didn’t do the team any favours. Usually, clubs play the Ducks and Kings in back-to-back legs so they don’t have to travel in between. But Montreal played at Anaheim on Sunday, then had to fly to San Jose for Tuesday’s game and then back to the Los Angeles area to face the Kings tonight.

Los Angeles might be good enough to get out of the Western Conference and to the Stanley Cup for the first time since winning the franchise’s most recent title in 2014. To win the West, L.A. is +800 and +1600 for the Cup. I’m not sure the Kings have enough offence as while they have nine guys with at least 20 points, they don’t have any with more than 45. Darcy Kuemper has been very solid in net in his second tenure with the club.

The Kings try for the season sweep as they won 4-1 in Montreal on Oct. 17 behind 26 saves from former Flames netminder David Rittich, who is the backup. Sam Montembeault stopped 28 shots for Montreal, including a save on Kevin Fiala on a penalty shot.

L.A. is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings, and the total has gone over in just one of those.

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal snapped a five-game skid with a 4-3 win in San Jose on Tuesday – a loss would have dropped the Habs back to .500 for the first time since early January. Joel Armia had the tie-breaking goal shorthanded at 15:56 of the third, his 10th goal of the season. Armia has now scored shorthanded goals in back-to-back games and became the fourth Canadiens player in the last 25 years to accomplish that. No player has ever scored a shorthanded goal in three consecutive games for Montreal.

The Canadiens also scored twice on the power play via Cole Caufield (26th goal of season) and Brendan Gallagher (12th) and once at even strength from Alex Newhook (10th). Hard to lose an NHL game with you score shorthanded, at even strength and with the man advantage.

Blueliner Lane Hutson had an assist to end a five-game points drought and became the second-fastest rookie defenceman in Canadiens history to record 40 points in a season behind Hall of Famer Chris Chelios, who did it in 48 games in 1984-85. Sam Monteambeault was in net Tuesday, so it will be rookie Jakub Dobes tonight. He’s 4-0-0 on the road with a 0.98 GAA. The Canadiens are 8-3 in their past 11 road games.

Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles will have a major rest advantage as it hasn’t played since Saturday when it was a 4-2 winner at Eastern Conference favourite Carolina to snap a four-game skid and avoid a winless five-game road trip through the East. Kevin Fiala led the way with two goals and is up to 18 on the season, second on the team behind Adrian Kempe’s 24. Phillip Danault had a goal and assist and became only the fourth Kings player in the past 20 years to record 20-plus assists in each of his first four seasons with the franchise.

Los Angeles scored more than two goals for the first time in eight games. All-Star blueliner Drew Doughty played in only his third game of the season off injury and had an assist for his first point of the year. Darcy Kuemper improved to 15-6-6 with a 2.16 GAA and .920 SV with the win and should be in net again here. Blueliner Mikey Anderson (5G, 9A) was out Saturday with a finger injury and won’t play tonight. Los Angeles is 10-1 in its past 11 at home.
