Canadiens vs. Flames NHL Betting Odds

This is not part of the Hockey Night in Canada doubleheader on Saturday as that features Toronto at Colorado and Dallas at Edmonton. Both Montreal and Calgary are battling for their playoff lives.

The Flames have a shot to finish as high as third in the Pacific Division and avoid a Wild-Card spot and first-round matchup with a division champion. They also could miss out on extra hockey completely. Calgary is +245 to make it for the first time since 2022. It’s Wild Card or bust for Montreal as it has no chance to get as high as third in the Atlantic Division. The Habs are +600 to reach the playoffs and -900 for no.

Calgary tries for the season sweep as it won 3-2 in overtime at Bell Centre on Nov. 5 as a -155 favourite (total was 6.5). The Canadiens took a 2-1 lead at 5:56 of the third on a Joel Armia shorthanded goal, but the Flames’ Matt Coronato tied it at 17:14 of the third and won it just seven seconds into overtime. He was the obvious No. 1 star. Sam Montembeault was in net for Montreal and Dustin Wolf for Calgary.

Overall, the teams have split the past 10 meetings and the over-under is 5-5 in those.

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal’s season-high five-game winning streak was snapped Thursday in a 3-2 overtime loss in Edmonton to start a four-game trip. Evan Bouchard won it at 4:53 of OT. Cole Caufield (31st of season) and Joel Armia (11th) had the Habs’ goals. Caufield has scored in four straight games and has at least a point in six in a row. He is the 10th different player in Canadiens history to post at least three different four-game goal streaks in a single season and the first to do so since Guy Lafleur with five in 1977-78. The only other NHL player this season with at least three four-game goal streaks is Oilers star and Hart Trophy favourite Leon Draisaitl with four. Rookie Lane Hutson had an assist Thursday and has a six-game points streak, his third streak at least that long. Those three six-game point streaks are the most by a rookie defenceman in NHL history. Hutson’s 45 assists have tied Mats Naslund (1982-83) for the second-most assists by a rookie in a single season in franchise history behind Chris Chelios’ 55 in 1984-85. Sam Montembeault took the loss, and it might be rookie Jakub Dobes’ turn Saturday. He’s 6-2-1 with a 2.63 GAA and .909 SV. Montreal is 2-5 in its past seven vs. Western Conference foes.

Calgary Flames

Calgary lost for the fourth time in five games Thursday, 3-2 in overtime in Dallas to conclude a six-game road trip at 2-4 but at least getting a point in two of those defeats. The Flames were up 2-0 on the Stars early in the second period on goals from Joel Farabee (10th of season) and Mikael Backlund (11th), who had gone 15 games without a goal. It was his 221st career goal to pass the late Johnny Gaudreau (210) for ninth place on the franchise’s all-time list. Backup Dan Vladar got the start in net, so it should be back to Dustin Wolf here. The American has 29 wins in his 55 career games and can become the third-fastest goaltender in franchise history to reach 30 career wins, behind Miikka Kiprusoff (52 games) and Vladar (55). Wolf has been much better at home, going 14-6-2 with a 2.27 GAA and .925 SV. The under is 7-1 in Calgary’s past eight games.
