The Montreal Canadiens currently sit dead-last in the Eastern Conference with 51 total points on the season and a goal differential of -87. On Wednesday, they’ll face what’s about an equal foe when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus hasn’t yet been eliminated from contention yet but they are 16 points behind the No. 8 seeded Washington Capitals.

Canadiens vs. Blue Jackets NHL Betting Odds

There aren’t many trends that look good for the Habs these days. They are just 22-48 in their last 70 road games, they’re 5-15 in their last 20 against Metropolitan foes and 9-23 in their last 32 games playing on one-days’ rest.

As for the Blue Jackets, they do play well against teams with a losing record. They are 8-1 in their last nine against a team with a winning percentage below .400. They’re also 13-3 in their last 16 as a favorite.

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens have picked up three good wins in their last 10 games. Unfortunately, they have been surrounded by losses otherwise. The three wins have paid bettors fairly handsomely, though, including a 5-4 shootout win coming against the Tampa Bay Lightning and then a 7-4 win over the New Jersey Devils.

On offense, Nick Suzuki leads the roster with 55 points on the year while Cole Caufield is behind him with 38. Outside of that, no other player has over 30 points on the season. It doesn’t help that their goaltending is the furthest thing from consistent either. A total of five different players have started in the net, which is not what you want to see. This team has talent, but it clearly isn’t their year to compete.

Columbus Blue Jackets

There was a point in the season when the Blue Jackets were holding onto a 27-23-1 record on the year and things were looking up for them. They’ve hit a brick wall of late, though, as the team has dropped eight of their last 10 contests.

A big reason for their struggle has been in the net, they rank 30th in the league in goals allowed per game. Elvis Merzlikins has gotten the most starts and is 24-19-6 but has a .904 save percentage along with allowing 3.40 GAA. That number is quite hideous and it’s really hard to win games when a team is coughing up that many tallies.

Columbus really needs to win this game if they want to keep their very slim playoff hopes alive. However, laying any juice with them is quite risky. This is one of those spots where you have to plug your nose and pick a side as neither looks particularly strong.
