NHL: New York Rangers at Montreal Canadiens

The struggling Montreal Canadiens will look to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday night, but they'll have their hands full against the surging St. Louis Blues.

It’s far from the start to the season Montreal wanted, but they’ll come into Saturday’s contest rested following a 7-2 blowout loss against the Rangers on Tuesday. The Blue are continuing a four-game Eastern Conference road swing, which they opened with a well earned 5-1 win in Toronto on Thursday.

St. Louis opened as a -128 favourite to win on the NHL odds.

Blues vs. Canadiens NHL Betting Odds

The Blues swept the season series last year, outscoring Montreal 13-5 across two games. Those games snapped a three-game Canadiens win streak in head-to-head action.

St. Louis has lost four of their last five games at the Bell Centre, but that could change this year as they have a solid 3-1 road record. They’ve been a great cover option for bettors at 6-2 against the spread overall, including 3-1 ATS on the road. While the total has gone Under four times for the Blues this season, it’s important to remember that St. Louis and Montreal have combined to score at least nine goals in four straight head-to-heads.

It’s been a dismal year for the Canadiens as they’ve dropped five of their last six games and they sit dead last in the Atlantic Division with a 2-4-1 record. At 3-4 ATS, they’ve also struggled to keep games close. One of Montreal’s main issues is generating offence, which has led to the total going Under in three of five home dates.

St. Louis Blues

It was the offer-sheet duo of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway who put St. Louis up early against the Leafs on Thursday. Alexandre Texier and Jake Neighbours also found the back of the net before Holloway sealed the win with an empty netter for his second goal of the night. Jordan Binnington made a season-high 40 saves in net and didn’t allow multiple goals for the first time this year.

One player who won’t be in the mix for the foreseeable future is centre Robert Thomas, who suffered a broken ankle in a loss to Winnipeg on Tuesday. Thomas, who has six points (1G, 5A) in seven games, played all 82 games last season and finished with a career-high in points (86) and goals (26).

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal’s hopes of competing for a playoff spot looks like a long shot at this point. The Habs were completely dominated by New York on Tuesday, trailing 4-0 by the middle of the first period. Nick Suzuki scored both Canadiens’ goals, his first of the season, but the team was heavily outshot 45-23. Suzuki (2G, 5A) and Cole Caufield (6G, 1A) share the team lead in points. Sam Montembeault was yanked after allowing four goals on 10 shots against the Rangers, while Cayden Primeau made 32 saves in relief.

Despite the early pull on Tuesday, Montembeault will get the start on Saturday. Neither goalie has been great this season, but Montembeault’s numbers are a bit better. He’s lost his last three starts, but his 3.16 goals-against average and .909 save percentage beat out Primeau’s 4.21 GAA and .880 SV.
