With the defense already struggling and the offense now without it’s MVP, the Texans season is in serious peril. They’ll have to pull the biggest upset of Week 10 if they’re to go into Los Angeles and knock off the first-place Rams.

The Houston Texans were dealt a tremendous blow when they lost their rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson to a torn ACL in practice last week. Things went from bad to worse when Tom Savage looked absolutely awful in a close loss to the Indianapolis Colts at home.

Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Texans are the biggest dog of the week as they’re now a 12-point underdog at Los Angeles. That line opened at -11 but it’s quickly climbed to -12. The Rams haven’t laid 10 or more points at all in the last three years while the Texans have already covered as a dog in that role once this season (at New England).

Houston Texans

Even after a 41-38 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on the road in Week 9, there was still a legitimate sense of optimism surrounding Watson and the Texans. However, that changed when Watson suffered a season-ending injury in practice last Thursday. The outlook got a lot worse three days later when it became clear that Houston would be in tough to contend for a playoff spot with Savage as their quarterback. Savage ended up completing just 19-of-44 attempts for 219 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Indianapolis.

This week’s opponent will represent an even more difficult challenge as the Rams defense has been completely transformed under Phillips. Los Angeles ranks in the top 10 in scoring defense so the room for error will be marginal. The Houston defense has also been hit hard by key injuries including to J.J. Watt up front. The Texans rank 30th in the NFL in scoring defense with an average of 26.0 points allowed per game heading in to Week 10.

Los Angeles Rams

Los Angeles has emerged as one of the most complete teams in the NFL under head coach Sean McVay this season. The Rams lead the NFL with an average of 32.9 points per game this season. They also rank in the top 10 in points allowed. Second-year quarterback Jared Goff is coming off his best performance as a pro after throwing for 311 yards and four touchdowns without an interception or sack in last week’s 51-17 win over the New York Giants. McVay will make sure a game plan is in place to help Goff build off another strong outing this weekend at home. Meanwhile, running back Todd Gurley topped 100 total yards with two touchdowns against the Giants.

On the other side of the football, Phillips will have plenty of different looks dialed up against an offense that he should know well from his time in Houston. The Rams have done an excellent job executing up front and producing pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season. As long as the Rams don’t fumble this game away with sloppy turnovers and penalties, they should easily roll to a win and cover.
