They did the job in vastly different ways, but the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers both carry peerless records into their Week 2 NFC South matchup Sunday in Charlotte. The Saints laid waste to the Green Bay Packers last week, handling the defending NFC North champions 38-3. That had oddsmakers optimistic about their chances of a 2-0 start despite facing a tough road encounter with a Carolina team that opened with a 19-14 triumph over the New York Jets.

The Saints are 3.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with a total of 45.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

New Orleans has the hook on the magic number of -3.5 – though if you’re feeling a bit squeamish about that extra half-point, you can knock it out for -133 odds. That said, bettors might not even care about the hook, with the Saints having gone an incredible 15-6 against the spread in their previous 21 games as a road favourite. The Panthers, on the other hand, have gone just 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine games as a home underdog dating back to the end of the 2018 regular season.

The total for this divisional matchup is installed at 45, with the Under (-117) providing slightly lower value than the Over (-103). And there’s a rather significant Over trend permeating the recent head-to-head series, with 11 of the previous 14 meetings finishing above the number. But bettors beware: the Panthers are riding a 2-5-1 O/U stretch over their last eight home games, with four of those contests producing 40 or fewer total points.

New Orleans Saints

It certainly won’t be this easy every week, but last week’s evisceration of one of the top teams in the NFL last season is a great start to the post-Drew Brees Era in New Orleans. Quarterback Jameis Winston rewarded head coach Sean Payton’s decision to name him the Week 1 starter, throwing five touchdown passes on just 20 total attempts. The New Orleans defence also got the job done, picking off Aaron Rodgers twice while adding a fumble recovery.

Carolina Panthers

The first game of Sam Darnold’s Panthers career was largely a success, as the fourth-year quarterback finished with 279 passing yards and a score to beat his former team. And as you might expect, he had plenty of help from all-world running back Christian McCaffrey, who racked up 187 total yards on an absurd 30 touches. New Orleans held him to just 90 rushing yards in two meetings in 2019 (he didn’t face them last year), but he added 141 receiving yards.
