Move over Stephen Curry and Cam Newton. The state of North Carolina has a new chosen one. OK, things might not have reached that level, but Carolina backers are over the moon for Kyle Allen after the second-year quarterback threw four touchdown passes in last weekend’s 18-point win.

Will the magic continue when the Panthers travel to Houston to take on DeShaun Watson and the Texans?

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Panthers began the campaign 0-2 after a narrow loss to the Los Angeles Rams and a disappointing effort at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2. Carolina erased the bad feelings from those results because of the excitement surrounding Allen.

Oddsmakers aren’t drinking the Kyle Allen Kool-Aid just yet. Sports Interaction opened with the Texans favoured by 5 points. The spread dropped to four points before moving back up to 4.5.  Carolina is 3-8 against the spread in its last 11 games overall.

The Texans are coming off a 27-20 win over the Los Angeles Chargers as 3-point road underdogs. Houston has won two in a row after narrowly losing to Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. The Under is a 2-0 in the club’s last two games and 4-1 in its last five.

The Over/Under line opened at 46 at SIA and moved up a full point to 47. Nearly 60 percent of Sports Interaction bettors expect this game to go over the 47-point total while close to 80 percent think the Texans will cover the spread.

Carolina Panthers

There is no time table for the return of Cam Newton according to Panthers coach Ron Rivera. Team insiders think the former league MVP could be out for a couple more weeks with a foot sprain.

Foot sprain is the injury but many wondered whether Newton’s arm was healthy after a couple ugly outings this season. Allen is now 2-0 straight up as a starting quarterback for the Panthers. He started in a Week 16 win over the Saints last season. In two career NFL starts, he has 6 TD passes and zero interceptions.

Houston Texans

J.J. Watt is registered two sacks last weekend, but there’s another lineman wreaking havoc in Houston these days. Veteran defender Whitney Mercilus is responsible for all three of the Texans’ takeaways this season. He also has four sacks and five quarterback hits.

He’s filling a void in the pass rush many experts assumed there would be when Houston traded away Jadeveon Clowney.
