The Carolina Panthers have turned their season around following a rough start to the season – but they’ll face their stiffest test of 2019 as they tangle with the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.
The Panthers are coming off a much-needed bye after reeling off four consecutive victories following an 0-2 start. The 49ers have been even better, kicking off the campaign with six straight wins to remain one of two unbeaten teams to this point.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
The 49ers come in as a comfortable home favourite, which should come as no surprise to anyone that has seen them play this season. They’re a solid 4-2 ATS on the year despite having played four of their first six games away from Santa Clara. But the Niners aren’t so far removed from being a truly terrible cover option, having gone just 4-11 ATS in their previous 15 games against NFC opponents. And Carolina is riding a four-game cover streak overall.
The total for this one sits at 41.5, one of the lowest on the Week 8 schedule. The Panthers are 4-2 O/U on the season by virtue of a better-than-expected offence, and Carolina has finished above the total in six consecutive games following its bye week. San Francisco, on the other hand, has put together four consecutive Under conversions and is 12-3 to the Under in its previous 15 home games against teams above .500 on the road.
Carolina Panthers
As Cam Newton nears a return to action, the Panthers might find themselves in a quandary: Go back to the QB they selected first overall in 2011, or ride a backup in Kyle Allen who has led them back from the brink of a disastrous season? Allen has won all four of his outings while completing 65.6 percent of his passes with seven TDs and zero interceptions – but he could find things difficult against a 49ers pass defence allowing a league-low 133.5 yards per game.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have surged to prominence in Super Bowl futures betting, now the oddsmakers’ No. 3 choice at +800 to win the NFL championship (behind only New England and New Orleans). And they’re about to get some much-needed help in the passing game after acquiring receiver Emmanuel Sanders from the Denver Broncos. Sanders should bolster a San Francisco aerial attack that is averaging a dismal 214.5 yards per game this season.
