After back-to-back weeks of rather blah Thursday night matchups in the NFL, it’s a pretty good one in Week 9 and a playoff rematch between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. The Pack opened as 2.5-point road favourites with a total of 51.

NFL Week 9 TNF Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Playing in the Bay Area always means a bit more for Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers as he grew up not far from San Francisco as a 49ers fan and played collegiately at Cal-Berkeley. Rodgers is still irked that the Niners took QB Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft instead of him.

This will be the third time the two teams play in less than a calendar year and all at Levi’s Stadium. In Week 12 last year, San Francisco rolled to a 37-8 victory behind two TD passes from Jimmy Garoppolo. Rodgers had one of his least memorable games with just 104 yards on 33 attempts and was mercifully pulled late. He was sacked five times and lost a fumble.

Last season’s NFC Championship Game wasn’t much more competitive as the Niners won 37-20. Garoppolo was 6-for-8 for just 77 yards but San Francisco didn’t ask him to do much because Raheem Mostert had the greatest playoff game of any running back ever with 220 yards and four TDs on the ground. Rodgers threw for 326 yards and two scores but had two picks and fumbled three times, losing one.

Green Bay is 1-4 against the spread in its past five at the 49ers.

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay laid a major egg Sunday in being stunned 28-22 at home by a 1-5 Minnesota Vikings team. Rodgers said he just didn’t see any energy. He was pretty good in throwing for 291 yards and three scores but the Packers couldn’t stop Dalvin Cook, who had 163 yards rushing and four total TDs. Davante Adams caught all three Rodgers TD passes – all seven TDs in the game were by two guys. Green Bay played without top running back Aaron Jones, who missed his second with a calf injury. Decent chance he returns here even on a short week.

This will be the first-ever Thursday game between Green Bay and San Francisco and the first time Packers will have played at the 49ers in the regular season in back-to-back years since 1973-74. Dating to 1996, Green Bay has won 11 of the past 14 in the regular-season series.

San Francisco 49ers

The Niners have been schizophrenic all season and the bad version showed up Sunday in a 37-27 loss in Seattle. Garoppolo was awful before being pulled early in the fourth quarter – he was limping a bit so it’s not clear if it was injury-related or performance-related. If Jimmy G can’t go here it would be Nick Mullens, who played frankly better than Garoppolo on Sunday. All-Pro tight end George Kittle left with an ankle injury and doesn’t seem likely for Thursday as the team awaits an MRI result.

Mostert missed a second game in a row with an injury and won’t be back Thursday. Fellow running back Tevin Coleman had just returned from a fairly long injury absence, but he left in the first quarter. Top wideout Deebo Samuel and a handful of defensive starters missed the game.
