A good Sunday night game in Week 3 as the Packers visit the 49ers in a matchup of NFC division co-leaders.
The Niners opened as 3.5-point favourites on the NFL odds with a total of 48.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
It would surprise no one if this is an NFC playoff preview. It’s the third straight regular season they have faced off, all in the San Francisco area. Green Bay won 34-17 last year on a Thursday night – the Niners had just three points entering the fourth quarter but their QB that night was Nick Mullens, who is long gone. Jimmy Garoppolo was out injured.
Aaron Rodgers threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns for the Packers –he grew up not far from the San Francisco Bay area and of course starred collegiately at Cal. Davante Adams caught 10 of his passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. Green Bay has won 12 of the past 15 in the regular-season series but was thumped in the NFC Championship Game at Levi’s Stadium following the 2019 season.
The favourite is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings.
Green Bay Packers
Short week for Green Bay as the Packers played Monday in their home opener against Detroit and beat the Lions 35-17 after an ugly Week 1 loss to New Orleans. The Pack didn’t play well for a half against the Lions, down 17-14 at the break, but dominated after intermission. Aaron Rodgers was 22-for-27 for 255 yards and four scores, while running back Aaron Jones caught three TD passes and rushed for one.
The four TDs by Jones tied a Lambeau Field record and a Monday night overall record. Jones was the first NFL running back with three receiving TDs in a game since Danny Woodhead in 2015. The Pack played without two key defenders in safety Vernon Scott and pass-rushing stud linebacker Za’Darius Smith. He for sure will miss this one on injured reserve. Green Bay is 8-2 ATS in its past 10 September games.
San Francisco 49ers
The Niners will be playing their home opener after wins in Detroit (41-33) in Week 1 and Philadelphia (17-11) in Week 2. Rookie QB Trey Lance got zero snaps vs. the Eagles after four vs. the Lions. Some bad news for San Francisco, though, off that Eagles win.
Already having lost No. 1 tailback Raheem Mostert for the season, it saw three more tailbacks go down injured in JaMycal Hasty and rookies Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon. All were lost in the matter of a quarter. Hasty will not play in this one but both Mitchell and Sermon might. The team is bringing in a handful of veteran free agents (Lamar Miller, Duke Johnson, TJ Yeldon) this week. Niners wideout Deebo Samuel leads the NFL with 282 receiving yards. The 49ers have covered just five of their past 26 as home favourites.
