The Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions were a combined 1-8 entering last week but both teams managed to secure wins. Now these two teams have some opportunity to build momentum and pick up a second consecutive victory. While the Falcons are favored here, they are 0-3 at home this season while the Lions have a better road record (2-1) than home record (1-2). Which side is the best bet in this spot?

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The under is 5-2 in the Lions last seven games played on the road. However, the over has been 7-1 in their last eight games on the road against the Falcons. Detroit is 1-13 straight up in their past 14 games when coming into the game as the underdog and 1-9 straight up in their last 10 games played in the early afternoon. Detroit has also been 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games.

On the other hand, the over has been 5-2 in the Falcons last seven games and 5-1 in their last six games played in the early afternoon. Atlanta has been 2-8 straight up in their last 10 games played at home but 8-3 straight up in their last 11 games when playing at home against teams with a losing record.

Detroit Lions

The Lions have been playing better than their record shows. They have held a double-digit lead in almost every game but similar to the Falcons, they have been unable to close out those wins. In their last game, they were able to hold onto that lead en route to a 34-16 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Matthew Stafford did enough as he threw for 223 yards with a touchdown, although he had an interception.

However, it was the team’s rushing attack that stole the show. Rookie running back D’Andre Swift become the first Lions rookie to rush for over 100 yards and score two touchdowns since Barry Sanders. Longtime veteran Adrian Peterson also added on 40 yards and a touchdown. Their rushing attack helped them win the time of possession battle by a large margin. They’ll need to do the same against the Falcons, who enter with the worst defense in the NFL.

Atlanta Falcons

A week after the Falcons fired their head coach Dan Quinn, the team came out and put on a show against the Minnesota Vikings. They won 40-23 as Matt Ryan passed for 371 yards and four touchdowns. They were also able to total 99 yards on the ground as well. They were helped out by a disastrous day from Kirk Cousins, who threw three interceptions.

It seems the coaching change lit a fire under this team. The Lions are a flawed squad with holes all over their secondary. If Ryan can keep feeding Julio Jones and the Falcons can play with a lead again, they should put themselves in position to win.
