Giants vs. Lions Point Spread: NFL Predictions, Week 8 Odds

The New York Giants are in a major tailspin as they visit the Detroit Lions, who are clawing to keep pace in the competitive NFC North. Each of these squads heads into this matchup riding three-game losing skids, but the Lions have been a much better point spread wager for bettors so far.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The books opened with the Lions set as touchdown favourites at home and nearly all of the early action is coming in on Detroit, which is 4-2 against the spread (ATS). The Lions have come through the other end of a very difficult part of their schedule, losing to Kansas City, Green Bay and Minnesota, but they did manage to cover the number in two of those tilts.

While the future may be bright for the Giants with Daniel Jones at quarterback and Saquon Barkley at running back, the present is no picnic. New York, 2-5 straight up and ATS, is coming off another sloppy loss against Arizona and ranks 24th in total offence and 28th in total defence.

New York Giants

You have to expect games like last weekend’s loss to the Cardinals from a rookie quarterback. Jones tossed and interception, fumbled three times (losing two) and was sacked eight times in the 27-21 loss on home turf. That was with Barkley making his return to the lineup following an ankle injury, too, but the team says there are no plans to put Eli Manning back in as the starter. Meanwhile, Barkley didn’t miss a beat with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries to go along with three catches and another receiving touchdown. The only real bright spot the Giants can point to in this week’s preparation is that Detroit really struggles to stop the run, giving up 139.2 yards per game on the ground (fifth-worst in the league).

Detroit Lions

Matthew Stafford and Co. have to be looking at this game as a prime opportunity to get back in the win column. Detroit came up just a point short in Lambeau two weeks ago and then was out-gunned at Minnesota last week, so at 2-3-1, this is a huge game. Stafford is coming off a great game against the Vikings that saw him complete 30 of 45 attempts for 364 yards, four touchdowns and one pick. Now he gets to tee it up against a Giants defence that can’t stop anybody. This has the makings of a game that the Lions use to get some mojo back.
