The Dolphins host an Atlanta Falcons side that lost 14-10 to the Denver Broncos in the Hall of Fame Game last week.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

No sport is impacted more by head coaches than college and pro football. The bench boss decides when to go for it on fourth down, when to call a timeout, and when to challenge a call on the field.

In the preseason, some head coaches call a game with winning in mind while others are just looking to evaluate players. Shrewd NFL handicappers can gain an edge by formulating educated guesses as to which coaches play to win, and which play to avoid injuries.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn factors into the second group. The Dirty Birds are 0-9 straight up and against the spread in their last nine exhibition games – including last week’s loss to the Broncos.

Quinn owns the worst preseason ATS winning percentage (25 percent) of any active coach with two or more years’ experience. Atlanta is just 4-12 ATS in pre-season games since Quinn took the helm.

Atlanta Falcons

Quinn is bringing in another new offensive coordinator. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter is calling the plays this season after the Falcons moved on from Steve Sarkisian.

Koetter’s primary responsibility is to improve the running game in Atlanta. The Falcons finished 27th in rushing yards per game in 2018. Koetter called 23 running plays to 48 passing last week against Denver.

Third string QB Kurt Benkert was injured during the Hall of Fame game and is unlikely to play on Thursday. Veteran backup Matt Schaub will likely see the majority of snaps under centre, however, Quinn did hint Matt Ryan and the rest of his starters could play for one series on Thursday.

Miami Dolphins

Phins fans will get a chance to see their new general on the sidelines Thursday. Brian Flores worked for the New England Patriots for 15 seasons before joining Miami. He served as the linebackers coach for Bill Belichick last year, but he did have the defensive play-calling responsibility.

Flores is trying to determine who will be his starting quarterback in Week 1 of the regular season. Expect to see a good amount of time on the field for Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen on Thursday.
