The Bucs hope the coaching of Bruce Arians will salvage the career of quarterback and former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston. It’s a make-or-break year for the former Heisman winner as his contract is up after the season.

Can Bruce Arians get his first win as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday? They host the Dolphins in Week 2 of the pre-season and are short favourites at Sports Interaction.  Both the Bucs and Dolphins have new head coaches this year. It’s the former Cardinals coach Arians for Tampa Bay, who was “retired” for one year due to health reasons. Arians’ teams dating to his Cardinals days are 9-13 in pre-season games.

The Dolphins fired Adam Gase after a 7-9 season in 2018 and replaced him with former Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores – his first head-coaching gig. So far so good as Flores is 1-0 this pre-season.

Being somewhat neighbors, these teams usually play in the pre-season. Tampa Bay has won the past two, including 26-24 in Miami last year. The clubs also are holding some joint practices together in the Tampa Bay area early this week to prepare.

Miami Dolphins

Flores’ debut resulted in a 34-27 home victory last Thursday. Miami is one of the more intriguing teams to watch this pre-season because they have a legitimate quarterback battle going on between second-year player Josh Rosen and veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick – who played for the Bucs the past two years.

Word was that Fitzpatrick had the early lead, but Rosen looked quite good against the Falcons in completing 13 of 20 for 191 yards and leading three scoring drives of at least 60 yards. He played about half the game, with Fitzpatrick the first two series and going 2-for-5 for 20 yards. Flores hasn’t said yet who will start this game, but Rosen surely will play more regardless because he can use the reps, and it sounds like he will get some time with the first-team offence.

The Dolphins have been in the news the past few days because receiver Kenny Stills tweeted criticism toward owner Stephen Ross regarding his controversial Donald Trump fundraiser. Stills is one of the NFL’s more noted activists.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Arians’ debut wasn’t a success as the Bucs lost 30-28 in Pittsburgh last Friday. As expected, Winston didn’t play very long, completing 5-for-6 for 40 yards and a touchdown. Third-string QB Ryan Griffin got the most snaps by far, going 26-for-43 for 330 yards and a score.

One major concerning factor was the Tampa Bay defence getting a bit shredded because that unit was one of the worst in league history against the pass in 2018. Tampa Bay has lost defensive tackle Vita Vea for 4-8 weeks with a sprained LCL in his left knee. The No. 12 overall pick in the 2018 draft was injured last week in practice. Top linebacker Lavonte David will miss the entire pre-season as well following knee surgery.

Don’t be surprised if Arians tries some two-point conversions in this game — the Bucs tried three of them vs. Pittsburgh, including with 10 second left, and failed on all. Arians is a bit of a gambler in that regard.
