As if a cross-county trip isn’t difficult enough for the Miami Dolphins, they’re going to be squaring off with a San Francisco club who just got upset on national television and may be getting their starting quarterback and running back added to their lineup.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan was extremely unhappy with the 49ers performance last Sunday night, and his club is in a good spot for a bounce back effort, especially as they get healthier.

NFL Week 5 Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Given this AFC–NFC matchup, historical trend won’t play a big factor here as these teams have met six teams and are 3-3 against one another. Looking a little further, the 49ers are 4-1-1 against the spread (ATS) versus the Dolphins and are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games as a favourite. Oddsmakers currently have San Francisco as 8.5-point favourites.

The big news in this matchup is Jimmy Garoppolo will be back under centre for the 49ers. Under Shanahan’s tenure in San Fran, the 49ers are 22-7 with Garoppolo under centre and 5-22 when he’s not. Raheem Mostert is likely back from a knee injury too after missing two weeks.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins’ 1-3 record isn’t too indicative of their play. In fact, if not for five Miami field goals last week they would have had a good shot at handing Seattle their first loss. But with losses beginning to pile up and a zero-touchdown, two-interception performance from Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 4, the pressure is on in Miami.

The Dolphins are averaging a mediocre 23.3 points per game this season, and are 24th in the NFL with 5.4 yards per play. It’s still Fitzpatrick’s offence as Tua Tagovailoa watches from the sidelines, but the “Tua time?” questions are gaining steam as Miami fails to muster results.

It’s becoming a bend but don’t break defence in Miami too. They continue to allow over 400 yards a game, but rank in the top half in points against with 24 a game.

San Francisco 49ers

Few teams have been hit harder by the injury bug than the 49ers, and they’ve still managed to stay at .500. More key bodies are returning too, as George Kittle is back sand Deebo Samuel appears good to go, as well as defensive backs Ahkello Witherspoon and Jimme Ward.

Aside from the injury debacle, San Francisco has held solid with an offence posting almost 400 yards per game and a defence giving up just 17.8 points per game, third best in the NFL.

But how much of this is influenced by their New York trip in weeks 2 and 3? The 9ers are 0-2 against teams not named the Jets or the Giants and are 0-2 at home, so proceed with caution.
