The Los Angeles Chargers looked like they were on their way to a 2-1 start when they took a 17-7 lead in to halftime against the Houston Texans last Sunday. However, Los Angeles was outscored 20-3 in the second half, ultimately falling 27-20 at home. The bad news is that they are now 1-2 heading in to Week 4. The good news is that the Chargers will visit the Miami Dolphins this Sunday, giving them an excellent opportunity to get back to .500 as one of the biggest road favorites in NFL history.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Chargers were just the fifth NFL team since 1980 to be favored by 17 point or more in a road game, although the line has since dipped to -16.5. However, it’s worth noting that since 2004, LA is just 2-12 against the spread when they are favored by 13 points or more. On the flip side, the Chargers are 12-2 straight up on those contests.

Meanwhile, Miami has lost its first three games by an average of 39 points per game, which is the biggest reason why the spread is so big again this week. The Dolphins are 0-6 both straight up against the spread in their last six games dating back to last season. The under is 17-6 in their last 23 games as a dog of 10 or more.

Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles was rolling last week until its offence hit a wall in the second half. Philip Rivers threw for 325 yards and two scores, but he was sacked five times and the lack of consistency from one half to the next really hurt the Chargers. They’ll look to turn the page against a Miami team they should dominate.

If they were 3-0 at this point, this could be a place where they fall asleep on the road. The Chargers will be motivated to get back to .500, leaving zero room for error on the road against an inferior opponent.

Los Angeles has the talent to contend in the AFC. However, they need to start proving it on the football field to show they are ready to keep up with the true Super Bowl contenders. A lopsided win on the road this week should help them get back on track.

Miami Dolphins

Miami actually hung around with the Cowboys for the first half of last week’s lopsided loss. The Dolphins trailed Dallas by only four points at the half and probably should have had the lead at the break. They dropped touchdown in the end zone right before and then lost a fumble in the red zone. The Cowboys eventually got rolling and ended up pulling away for the 31-6 win, which leaves some major question marks about Miami’s state of mind heading into Week 4.

The more the Dolphins lose, the more of a toll it will take on the motivation of the players in their locker room. Miami doesn’t have the talent to keep up with the Chargers. However, this is their weakest opponent of the season after facing the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys.
