Broncos vs. Jets Point Spread: NFL Week 5 Odds, Prediction

Denver has lost back-to-back games after opening the season with a pair of wins. The Broncos have the talent to contend for a playoff spot in the AFC but to prove that, they’ll have to take care of business in this spot. New York is coming off a 31-12 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Jets are still listed as a 2.5-point favorite at home against the Broncos this Sunday.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

After upsetting the Detroit Lions on the road in Week 1, New York has come back down to earth in a hurry with three straight losses while falling to 1-3 against the spread. However, the Jets are still 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 home games dating back to last season and they will be playing with a sense of desperation this Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Broncos haven’t covered one spread this season with a 0-3-1 ATS record heading in to Week 5. Denver is 5-1 ATS in its last six games against the Jets so perhaps this is the week that they finally get that elusive cover as small underdogs on the road. The Total has gone over in five of the last six meetings between these teams. The total has been set at 43 points for this contest.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos came within six minutes and 27 seconds of upsetting the Jets before everything went wrong. Denver’s defence gave up 14 points in the final 6:27 while their offence couldn’t score a point (or pick up crucial first downs). It was a brutal finish to what was otherwise a very strong performance overall, which included holding the Chiefs’ high-flying offence to just 13 points through the first three quarters. The Broncos can’t afford a letdown in a winnable game here. Sam Darnold and the New York offence aren’t nearly as good as the Chiefs have been, which makes this a potential trap game following a close loss.

Even if the defence plays to its potential, Denver will need a better effort from quarterback Case Keenum and its own offence. Keenum went 21-of-33 for 245 yards with zero touchdowns and a pick while getting sacked four times by a Chiefs defence that has been one of the worst in the NFL this season. Keenum hasn’t thrown a touchdown since Week 1. Running backs Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman were excellent against Kansas City and they’ll have to lead the way in this spot.

New York Jets

There was a sense of optimism surrounding the Jets following a 48-17 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 1. Darnold had played at a high level in his first NFL start, the defence looked outstanding and New York found a way to win on the road in prime time. However, the Jets have fallen apart since with three straight losses to the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville. Darnold has been held to a 57.5-percent completion rate while throwing four touchdowns and five interceptions.

Head coach Todd Bowles has gone from looking like he’s got this team on the right track to being a head coach squarely on the hot seat. The issue is that the Jets haven’t really been close in their losses. Another bad effort here and the boo-birds in New York are going to come out strong.
